Name that constellation!

Fun thread - I always love flying spinnakers! The asymmetrical chute in the attached photo came with my boat. We dubbed the sail "the Soob" since it looks a little like the Subaru logo (Japanese constellation) and we bought the boat in Japan. Can anyone identify the actual constallation on it? Trevor

From TJ's pic, it appears that the pole is a couple feet off the headstay and the sheet is pretty well eased. That would put the AWA at about 100 to 110. On nearly a beam reach, the boom needs to be much farther out than it is. He is carrying the boom close to center line which is killing the flow on both the main and spinnaker.

Alan, thanks.

I didn't see the pole. I thought he was pole-less equipped. Duh! And TJ, what the hell are you doing? What a mess! If anything, your boom should be over trimmed not under. You're fired. Psst, Alan, that'll teach him. P.S. Alan, rereading your critique, you're referring to TJs picture on this thread, right? The boom has to come in a little, not go out.

Yeah TJ!

No wonder you're single handed, no decent crew would have you! You need more practice, you better go melt that ice off and get out there. Stay on your sailboat and don't go back to work until you get it right!

NO Fred,

Quite the reverse. The boom is over trimmed, it needs to be eased out to port and the sheet eased. Vang sheeting becomes very effective at this point. I don't mention this stuff as a slap on the wrist. Far from it, it is strictly a comment of how to correct a sail trim error that might otherwise go un-noticed. I've paid hard earned money for a sailing instuctor to follow behind my boat and teach me the correct techniques on boat handling and sail trim. It has paid off big time.

Why the Attacks

Scott. What is the deal with the attack on TJ? Just point out what he can do to improve. I think that is something we can all do-improve.

Dan, I think you missed it...

Re read Scott's post with zealous , I really wish I could do this.... I think you will see Scott was not a villian here. Unfortunately with no voice inflection or facial exressions, when reading posts here, if it seems that someone is attacking someone else, chill for a while and reread the post. I don't think many people on this site are that mean or arrogant. Yea... spelling sorry I'm tired and can't spell anyway. r.w.landau

When in doubt ... fly the Spinnaker

So, how does one post a photo to this board?

Gee, step away from HOW for a minute . . .

and see what happens?!? Everybody jumps on you! Alan, from you I have no problem taking a critique. I'd love to have someone like you to follow behind me a teach me a thing or two. I have no qualms admitting that I always have something to learn regarding improved sailing. In my defense, if I remember when I took the picture, I DID trim in the main, but more to get it out of the way of my picture of the spinnaker. I made myself look bad (doesn't take much) to make the sail look good. As far as Scott's comments, I took the advice for exactly as it was intended. I've put in for a leave of absence at work as soon as the boat goes in the water, and I'll keep sailing until I get it right. They may not see me again until the leaves start to turn! (I wish.) T J

Dan, it's just friendly fun. R.W is an old timer

here so he knows what the comments were meant to do. Now Alan! I've always flown a radial or tri-radial spinnaker with the boom forming an extension of the pole. If the chute was drawing far enough forward (apparent) then we trim in just a little on the boom to force the air into the chute and not let it spill off of the leech of the main. The chute is the power sail. Would you explain your reasoning? What did that guy behind your boat tell you? Maybe he wanted to be in front of your boat? ;)

when you typed in your question look just above the 'typing box'. Put a check in the little box. After you're done typing and hit 'submit' you will see the screen asking for your picture. The software will find any picture on your system. Just point to it. Best feature Phil's put on here for,,well,,ever.

I'm assuming that you're pulling my leg,(about the pole and boom) right? My sailing coach was in a power boat trailing and directing the moves. We would do the manuevers and he would call the moves and techniques. I think it's the best way to learn, hands on and learn as you sail.

But Alan!!!

That doesn't explain your trimming technique. What is the reasoning of easing the boom? OK, I'll be right back after I review my recordings of the last AC races. OK, In race four Team NZ lost its' rig. The camera angles were poor on the prior downwind leg before the NZ mast broke. Alinghi kept going and popped the chute. Only one camera angle gave any kind of meaningful view. That view was of the boom lined up with the pole perfectly. AKA the Puget Sound method. Look at this months Cruising World. Icon is shown with the boom and pole in-line, but that's a Puget Sound boat too. Alan, please explain,,,,,

Holey mackerl,

Hasent anybody sailed a dingy with a spinnaker? From the pic's, he is not bad! Spinnaker pole is way foward, which tells me wind is ahead, hence tight main!! Also, its a big fat cruiser with a beautiful spinnaker flying in mid March, I'M JEALOUS, wish i could say the same. Tim, looks great, your a better sailor then most of us. Love the pics, especially this time of year.

Dan?

Doesn't anybody "bust chops" down there in Arkansas? Fred wanted to fire TJ, so I thought I'd pile on too since I'm a little cranky. I still have snow on my roof and the lake is still locked up in ice and now you guys are all showing off because you're out on the water! Actually, I'll bet TJ can show me how to set a spinnaker, and I'm looking at manuals trying to figure out what Fred and Alan are talking about, and I'd crew with TJ anytime, especially if it meant sailing up by Racine, even if summer doesn't get there until after the Fourth of July! Here's to a new season, I hope it gets here quick (for all of us up here in the frozen northeast)! :)

No pics this weekend

Well didn't get to fly the spinnaker this weekend, Just went to the Boat and pretended it was Noahs Ark. Rained all weekend. Went to Hurricane Hole when I got there Friday night and stayed in there until today when I had to head back to the docks. Turned the cell phone off friday night and found SOLITUDE....Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo

Too dark in the GARAGE for a photo

I tried to take a picture of my spinnaker, but there wasn't enough light in the garage to get a shot. Unfortunately we still have ice and snow here, so everything is still packed away. We should be on our "home waters" by May 1st. I'm off to Vancouver in mid April for a week long "tune-up" with some lads. After that, I'll be dying to get the old tub into the water and air out those linens. All the photos look great. Enjoy the early season.
