Well, took out and flew to spinnaker for the first time this yearon Saturday. Hoisted it and cruised about 5 to 6 miles before we doused her. Just me and a buddy (Tommy Dirst) help me fly her. Dousing went very smooth for just two people. Had so much fun, packed her again and flew her a second time that afternoon. A friend of mine who took the picture (Jim Jumonville) soon was left behind. Winds 5 to 10 miles and hour. Max speed on run was 6.9.....Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo Lake Ouachita, AR

Another Shot

Oh Yeah, by the way the spinnaker is off of a cal 40. I purchased the spinnaker off of ebay for $550 Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo

Looks great

Tim She looks great what size is your Yacht? I have a 380 and I am looking at getting a spinnaker mainly because she is so slow down wind. I sail mainly with my partner Kerry and I'm a little nervous we can handle one. Was that 6.9 miles per hour? We work in Knots here, I think thats about 6 knots. Thats a good speed considering the wind was not strong. I haven't had my 380 over 5.5 knots, even in 25 knot winds. I'm having a folding prop installed soon so I hope that will give me more speed. Keep up the good work. Wayne

6.9 Knots

Yes that is knots. The boat is a 1986 Hunter 34. Very fast boat in light to medium wind. Above 20 Mph winds she starts to get a little weatherhelm action going. Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo. I don't have a windguage So I ussually judge windspeed by mph. at 13 mph I ussually see whitecaps starting to form, and I try to judge off of that theory.

Congratulations Tim!

Congratulations Tim! Great images, beautiful sail....have fun. I have an assymetrical gennaker on my Columbia 24, and use it as much as possible. I do need at least one crewmember, haven't even tried to tackle it myself singlehanded. Late last fall I bought a Tri-radial on eBay for my Hunter 27, can't wait to try that one out in a few weeks. Looks like this may be a colorful thread! This is my Columbia 24. Enjoy! Jim

Smooth Sailing

Tim, She's a beauty. Looks like you guys had a great time. Thanks again for the sanitation hose. My project is complete. I'm ready for the season as well. Mike Mangione

Wayne, check your speed over the ground

We have hit 7 kts over the ground using a GPS, with approx 7.5 to 8 showing on the knot meter. That was with a 150% genny and main only. I cannot understand why you can't do more than 5.5 kts IMHO David

pole position

Note from your posts that the chute came off another boat. In looking at the two pix you posted, in the second one (without the main flying, you have the pole pulled down a bit more, and the shoulders look formed much better. Just an observation. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Tom, by golly your right!

Yeah, I was wondering how long it would be before anyone noticed and said anything. I still have to mount a downhaul on the pole still. The topping lift can be almost useless sometimes. Proper spinnaker sheet handling would probably help also. I'm going to re-rig the spinnaker setup in a couple of weeks. Right now my Jib Sheet is my spinnakers. I have to hoist and douse on the Starboard side. Ive been keeping a close eye and have not had the 7/16" halyard chafe. Tim Welsh Hunter 34.. AKA Cabo Wabo

Tim!!!

Didn't you ask here last year whether you should buy that chute? Didn't I tell you to go for it? It looks great! I'm taking the credit. :)

I just can't wait!

I'm still waiting for ice to melt in the marina and can't wait to get the boat in the water. But since it seemed we were showing off spinnakers, here's mine from last summer from the cockpit. Flew it the first time single-handed in light wind. Talk about being busier than a one-armed paper hanger. You should have seen me trying to douse it, now THAT was a sight.

Tom, at Carlisle Lake

Are you an old Flying Scot sailor? To make an observation like that, I would bet that you have raced! Maybe on a Scott, which is very popular on your lake. The Flying Scot is were I got my spinnaker training, and you are right on!!!! P.S. Tim, the pic's are great, spinnaker looks fantistic, and I cant wait for spring. Happy sailing, George

George ...

George ... you're right, I'm an OLD racer, but it was big boats on Lake Michigan, and Snipes before that. I cruise a C27 on Carlyle Lake, but I think this year I'm going to get back into racing (on someone else's boat). Won't be a dinghy though. I can't hike out all day anymore. Seems like all my muscle mass has centered about six inches above my belt :) Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

more spinnakers

my FAVORITE part of sailing is trimming the spinnaker. SO Much CONCENTRATION is needed to do it well..

Tom, no offense

intended!!! You know what your talking about, with you observations on the spinnaker. I'm an old guy, wish I had you experience on the big boats. Met some sailors from Carlyle Lake, on Flying Scots, and they are good! Feel the same, too old to hike out all day, good luck too you, George

Looking at your last summer pic, the spinnaker looks good but what's up with the main? You're on a reach and your main is almost centerline and sheeted much too tight.

Our favorite spinnaker shot

Dad is 80+, and hoped to cruise when he retired, but he and Mom couldn't agree! Here he is backlighted by our asymetric as we head west around Point Pelee into the setting sun. We go out with my brothers every summer, now. That's a truly great addition Lady Lillie has made to our life (one of a number!) By the way, we are sailing wing and wing in this picture, David Lady Lillie

Bowsprit

For those who fly asmetricals, here's a bowsprit to consider. It's two pages of pix and directions.

Alan, Why?,,,is TJs main trimmed wrong?

I've rarely flown an Akite. The last time no one aboard knew how to trim it the right way. In my minds eye, if a pole were holding the chute, then the boom of the main looks good. Or at least close. OK, I would trim the main a little. What are you going by?
