Saturday we had our first sail of the season on our H380. The Coast Guard Aux. folks came down in the morning and inspected the boat--we got this year's sticker. Then we loaded the food and powered out of the harbor. The Max prop is still smooth as silk. The weather was grey with winds of 15 to 20 knots but the water was pretty flat. A few minutes out of the harbor we unfurled the main and the jib. That is so cool! It was a southerly and not too cold for this time of the year. We clipped along at about 6 knots--I'm afraid I didn't set the sails that well but it was so enjoyable just to be sailing. I just sat there and enjoyed it.We sailed to Chuckanut Bay (Puget Sound, north end) and rafted up to some friends for a late afternoon pot-luck.The sun came out and the winds died. The weather was perfect. We powered home around sixish to be met in Bellingham Bay by three gray whales. It looked like two large ones and a smaller whale. You could hear the swoosh as the rose to get air. What magnificent creatures they are. I hope the Native Americans at Neah Bay don't kill any more whales. As we docked, we had champagne--it was that type of day. The H380 was perfect.
