Our sailing club has a tradition of sailing on January 1st to start the year out properly. We had record breaking temperatures of 75 degrees. The winds were 20 to 30 with higher gusts. A lot of the boats went out but didn't put up any sail. Did I mention how much I like my roller furling main?

I have not been out this year (last too days) but was out twice last week. I will be there this upcoming weekend but the temps are supposed to be down in the 60's. The winds have been strong over the last two weeks. Saw some gusts over 40 and constant around 30 last week. Reefed jibe was all that was necessary to make good speeds. We are lucky to live in this part of the country versus the north where sailing this time of the year would be near impossible.

I went out on a 5-10 knot day. Got to the other side of the bay and the wind died. I motored in and saw that the othe side of the bay had plenty of wind. I was deep into a conversation so I didn't noticed before. Next time the wind dies on me, I'll be checking the water on the other sides.

We had an awesome sail for the first day
Like your club, my wife and I have the same tradition. We spent New Year's eve out and watched the ball drop and then got up, had breakfast (Eggs Benedict) and sailed down and out into the mouth of the York River where she dumps into the Chesapeake Bay and then back up to our little mini-bay just entering into one of the creeks. Great time ringing out another and in this one. Mimosa's were great. Winds light and variable, 5 to 10 knots, air temp low 50's, cloudy with a light mist. Brrrrrrrrrr, but on the water
Nothing beats it except being down near the equator.

We spent New Year's eve out and watched the ball drop and then got up, had breakfast (Eggs Benedict) and sailed down and out into the mouth of the York River where she dumps into the Chesapeake Bay and then back up to our little mini-bay just entering into one of the creeks. A bit warmer here sailors. My partner and I sailed up the coast from Melbourne to Appollo Bay and back again. We had good winds up to 35 knots but mainly 15-20 just perfect for our 380. A little scary coming back into the heads to Port Phillip bay, we picked the wrong tide and got thrown around a little, Kerry said she looked at me and all she saw was a wall of water, at times we were surfing down the waves at 12 knots. We anchored off Melbourne New years eve to watch the fire works, the temperature hit 44C bloody hot, thats 110 F in your language. The fishing was OK also. Happy New year to you all.

thanks for the response anyway. Grew up with a Larry Long and served with him in the military and have lost track of him, just thought it might be you. Yes, Patrick, Duckoma might be appropriate if we'd ever get any rain. And it is near the Wild Bird Sanctuary at the Great Salt Plains. That's the only body of water of any size in the best part of the state for sailing, plenty of wind all the time (nothing to stop it between Canada and there except a few barbed wire fences in Kansas). The lake is just awful though.
