Hello all, This site has given me alot of knowledge and in an effort to give back, I share my smiles, trials, and tribulations. If not for entertainment, then maybe some insight for someone. My plan is to visit every spot, cove on the Great South Bay and around Long Island and write, picture, and video it on my blog site: http://lifeunderasail.blogspot.com . I have just recently made the first sail of my new Hunter 25 and added the blog of my experiences. Cheers, Nick T

Nick, you guys have balls

I like that! Welcome to the club! Sailors are just better. You have a nice boat for the South Shore. I like the North Shore the water is deeper. See you at Block Island this summer but be careful using an outboard outside. Jim from New Jersey.

H 25' is a nice boat.

I sailed on the Chesapeake on a friends a few years ago. His had a tiller rather than wheel. I liked the linkage you added from the rudder to the outboard. Four friends slept on that boat in a cove down there pretty comfortably if not cozily. I assume you have the shoal draft keel for the GSB (Great South Bay)? I also helped a friend take a new (to him) Mac 26S from Babylon back to NYC and then Yonkers via Fire Island Inlet with only an 8 HP outboard. My first boating experience on the GSB, 'outside' and FI Inlet as I am more familiar with the Sound and Hudson River (which I also recommend as others have). Be careful of those inlets (FI, Jones, Shinnecock) as they can get a bit nasty with strong winds, ocean swell and tidal current. We only had 10' waves until a mile out and then it was no problem as we passed Jones Beach on Memorial Day with an air show going on. No better viewing or hearing platform. When planning a trip 'outside' I suggest talking to locals who are familiar with the inlets and reading the CG Coastal Pilot (#2) which you can download here: http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/nsd/cpdownload.htm You will also want to get the Eldridge Tide and Pilot book for 2008. There is a lot of verbiage but the Coastal Pilot descriptions of each inlet is pretty helpful (if you have never been there before). Never leave the dock without duct tape. In my experience it is usually the $.10 screw or bolt that can really ruin a good outing. Our boat's mooring pennant parted in a bad blow after being chafed by a screw embedded in the toe rail became exposed. Long story short, carry extra chafing gear too. Nice blog. You must be pretty 'jazzed up' to have posted the blog on the same day you did it (which is probably the best time to do so when you are still rocking from the boat). My boat blog below. Keep on posting.

Oh BTW

I forgot to tell you about the two kinds of wind on the bay at all times Enough and too much can't say that for the north shore

Live & Learn

Hello all, Thank you for the wisdom. With my Hunter 25, I have a trailer which allows me to tow it to various desired sailing spots. The South shore of Long Island is a start, but not a final destination. I plan to exhaust all possible sailing options here and within reasonable sailing reach.Any tips are much appreciated and I will continue to contribute my sailing smiles, trials, and tribulations. Cheers, Nick T

RAD has a point about the GSB

since it is right next to the ocean there is usually a pretty good wind (enough and too much). The winds in the Sound and on the Hudson can vary a bit more (none, not enough, enough and too much). I also like the Peconics which is not that far from you by trailer and really quite beautiful. Only problem there is finding a launching ramp where you can leave your tow and trailer as the 'towns' out there (and along the GSB) get very protective of their jurisdictions (if you don't already know this you will find out). The less 'Hampton' like places will probably be more laid back but there are some really great bay beaches in the Peconics and Gardener's Bay. Don't tell anyone I told you but you might consider using Mattituck inlet for launching and then coming around into Gardener's Bay via Plum Gut. I am just not sure where you would leave your trailer and wheels without attracting small pieces of paper from the local constabulary without the proper stickers (my guess is Mattituck is pretty laid back but all the towns/villages are looking for that ticket $$. I have the Maptech chart books for both the North and South shores of LI and they indicate every boat ramp and marina (usually with a phone # to call, even for ramps). See below link:

homesick

Boy, this thread boght me back 37 years. I grew up in Mattituck nlived on both Mattituck Creek and on the Peconic Bay. My dad was into real estate and found a few fixer uppers. The Bay house (Broadview Lodge) was five homes away from Mattituck Yacht Club a sunfish racing club. Yes they had nerve call it a yacht club. The bay was beautiful in the early 70's alive and vibrant. I can't tell you how many flounder I took out of Mattituck Creek as a young boy. Anyway, the whole Eastern End of LI is gorgeous. Enjoy, as my memries of it are sweet!

My ex wife grew up at Broadview Lodge so either you lived there before or after her and her family and my kids still live out there.
