The first time out on the lake was also the first race. When the gun went off, we were about 500 yards on the wrong side of the line, so we had to sail back and then start. About three minutes behind everyone else, but it was a start. The wind was 15-20 knots, and we sailed a better course and passed everyone by the first mark. We lead the rest of the way, but will probably get dropped back on corrected. However, it was the first time that I took the gun at the finish. Last year I was the pickle boat most of the time. I didn't get to use my new headsail (light air 125%), but the folding prop was waht I think made the biggest difference. Had the crew had even a little experience, I think I would have put in a single reef when heading to wind, but we were barely controlling the boat through tacks. We will get better, but the boat is performing well now. Quite a treat to get back to the dock first also. Next race is Sunday against a differnt group of racers. We will see what happens then.

GOOD JOB Steve!!

Your only warming up. What is the name of your Boat? What is your PHRF? The folding prop is more important to improving your times then a new sail ..especially the longer the course. What kind of prop? Why did you by a 125 instead of a 150 deck sweeper? Is it roller furling? If so Sail changes are close to impossible to be REAL competitive. I take my roller off for races. I have all NOTH SAILS, Kevlar .. ..5 shoot, .75, shoot, 1.5 shoot , 1.5 asymetrical, 150 #1 kevlar, a 130 #2 , a blade etc and a BRAND SPANKING NEW .5 drifter , added more reef points for heavy weather winter sailing.(I live in the North West and race all year..I have raced in 55knts ..this year Winter Vadhon Island ..aprox 40 mile winds averaged 42 knts. (knoked the boat over with spinaker full..death roll and broach was on the pole side ..ripped toe rail off ..(down hakk and snapped down hall line) but still finishe and placed about 40th place out of 90 boats. I Won 7 First Places this year including Cape Flattery ..over 100 nautical miles, 107 boats , FIRST OVERALL!!. Steve ..Keep writing back ..I can give you some tips to start walking on your competition!! I have a world class crew ..One completed The round the world Whitbred , Vic-Maui (from Ca. to Maui HI.), Straits of Georgia, Won two Swifsure Lighthouse race, 9 swiftures, and this year won Season Championship ..(Best record for "A Fleet " boats in South Pugit Sound! ..I LOVE RACING!! Tony Re Skipper Re-Treat ..(1985 40 Hunter"

Re: Tony

Tony, Thanks for the encouragement. The boat is JS3, which is my wives & my initials. I used kids letter blocks, with one at an angle showing three "S"'s just to be different. I now have a PHRF of 186, but race 201 in our club races. MORC gave me 191, so I think the rating us up in the air. The folding prop is a Gori. It still continues to amaze me on the difference. The weekend races were two light air days, and last year the boat wouldn't even move below 3 knots wind. Yesterday, I passed larger boats going downwind with 2-4 knots with just the main and 110%. The furling and the tracks inside the standing rigging is the reason for the 125%. To get anything bigger would require new tracks on the boat, and it is too new and the wife wouldn't like the expense to do that. I race cruising class, with JAM on series, and ASM for specials. Not "series" racing, but it is fun for me. Sail changes would not happen too often, but I can manage fairly quickly. I spent 5 years in Bremerton, and moved out to Port Huron about 8 years ago. I know the weather in the sound and strait. The weather on the Lake Huron can be about the same, but no salt water. I continue to learn more sail trim, and the boat responds well. I need to learn a lot more before I worry about having a crack crew, but this year at least it is nice not finishing dead last. First overnight race coming up this Thursday, with the second next week. I will see how she does on the distance races now. I didn't see any Mac wins in your resumes. Every try the fresh water ocean racing? Thanks again, Steve

Bremerton ? Been in the Service?

Sounds like your going to have a BLAST! Fresh water must be nice. (I pay $75 before each race to have bottom wiped down.. The tracks are in a wierd place on Hunters duie to the B&R rigging. I need to put in trcks for SMALL sails ..Heavy weather for the outside tracks on the 40 Hunter do not allow the boat to point for the boat is 13 feet 8 inches wide and the tracks on the "outside shrowd area tend to have the boat fall off. You must have been in the service. I go tp Poulsbo and Bremerton when cruising then to Blake Island. Good luck on your up comming longer night races. Oh ..with your rating of 186 ...to 201 ..Can I assume you do not have a Spinnaker? Go buy a used old blownout one first ..with a sock if possible. (I go one at first ..for only $200 ..and it saved me a bunch ..!9OtherwisI would have blown out my $5300 (each) new ones. Tip Know the night course well ..before you start. Prepare for all weather and NO MOON .(clouds) Make sure you have Flashlights to trimm the sails and a good 500,000 to 1,00,000 high powered light. Check VHF ..maybe Cell phone and know what contingenplan if one gets injured ..weather goes bad ..boat proble .(even like hitting dead head a getting a hole in the boat. The race is won ..BEFORE THE RACE Starts! DO us Hunter owners PROUD!! Tony

Sand Crab...

Tony, I was a sand crab at Keyport/Bangor. Spent 10 years on Chas SC doing the same thing. I have an asymmetrical that I bought new with the new boat (from HOW). I put on spreader lights this spring to help out on the night races (it was dark on the foredeck last year). We monitor VHF (with a spare) and have a cell phone on board all the time. Good coverage in the middle of Lake Huron for the cell. We run up the shore line for the race, so safe harbors are only 10-15 miles away. We plot position every hour during the day, and every 30 minutes at night (as well as GPS autoplot). Two of the crew work mid-nights, so we should have some alert people at any hour. We will still do shifts, but we can go a little longer for some during the night, and the others during the day. With good winds, we should be in around noon after a 8:00 PM start. The boat does best with 12-15 knts, so we are hoping for wind. Thanks for the good advice, and I'll let you know how we did next Monday. Steve

HUNTER 34 RACING

Steve, Tony - I am a beginner racer and have started the beer can series this year. I race JAM and a PHRF rating of 156 club 216 was assigned to me. In 12 knot winds she move near 6.8 knots close to the wind, but when the wind drops, we barely move. I have a 3 blade prop and the original equipment jib...110 I believe... Does the folding prop really make a diference? Should I consider a used 135 jib?? Thanks, Brad
