First post, interested in a Macgregor 26 ( I think )

MD, there is actually very little difference in the hull design on the X and M, with the M being a few degrees deeper V'd. The M will have a dagger board while the X has a swing keel (center board). This is the most important difference for us pertaining to the bottom. A dagger board will not move if you strike something. If you strike it hard enough you will damage either the dagger or the trunk or both. A swing keel will usually swing upwards and bounce over whatever you hit unless you are going backwards. When we were searching for a boat we sailed a brand new M in Miami. I later drove to Las Vegas to look at our X. Sailing characteristics are very similar as is the performance under power. Ultimately we choose the X because of the roomier cockpit and, in our opinion, better layout of the cabin. The standing room head is a nice bonus of the X when you have guests on board who want a little privacy. Ultimately, I would recommend checking out both and seeing which model fits your needs best.

If you want to trailer the boat, want to carry a 50hp motor on the back, a 26X or M may be for you. But neither is very good at either sailing or going fast with engine.

I don't know much about the non-motor sailer Macs. I hear that they are much better sailers.

I have another question......I looked at an X model today, the mast doesn't rotate on this particular model as it does on the M. How big of an issue is this or is it really an issue at all? Also, just a rough estimate is what I am looking for......if you had to replace the main sail and the jib sail with like kind performance and quality that originally came with the boat......what would be a ball park figure for this kind of expense? 2 grand per sail?

Mast not rotating shouldn't be an issue. I think it's a gimmick on the M anyway. Most sailboats don't have a rotating mast. Price for sails can vary widely. To replace in-kind, it should be around $1 K per sail, maybe less. There will be numerous sailmakers who can provide economy sails. There is also a used-sail market, which may help in a pinch. To get an idea, use the sail price estimator in the store on this site. Just go to the Store page and get an estimate for sails. They undoubtedly know the measurements already. You'll get a good price and good sails from SBO, so don't be afraid to look it up right now. Click on "Parts" "Shop" "Sail Loft". Good news ... I just looked and you can get a mainsail and genoa for about $1,600.
I'd look for original setup or aftermarket setup for trim features such as traveler with line-control traveler car, tracks for jib sheets, boom vang, possibly a backstay adjustment (if there is a backstay). See how the shrouds are attached. If you set-up on the ramp, quick disconnects can save time. Nothing is a buzzkill like your family waiting in the heat while the boat needs more than an hour in the parking lot to set-up and be put away when trailering. You might like to have furling when you are sailing, but you might not like it during set-up. I think many folks complain that it adds complication and time. With that boat, I don't think furling is necessary. Learn to sail the old-fashioned way ... hank on your head sail!
We'll give you more ... all you have to do is report back!

Your most significant concern on the X or M will be the motor. Make sure it has been well maintained and large enough for your needs. You don't want to be looking at buying a new motor.

Scott, thanks for the reply....this boat has no mods and is all original....Justin, yes, the motor IS my biggest concern and if and when I find the boat to proceed on given I have no hands on knowledge of sailboats it is my intent to have if professionally inspected or won't purchase.......too many for sale to not keep looking.....

A new main sail is on my to-do list. I got a quote from JudyB on replacing my main with a better quality sail equiped the same as mine (i.e. slugs, battens and double reef) for about $770.00. She has an exceptional reputation with the Macgregor family. A new genoa is next...

Some mods are a good thing, and if done well will save you a lot of money having to do them yourself. Nice things to look for are lines lead aft, lazy jacks, upgraded hardware, bimini etc. Barrier coat and bottom paint. Mainsail slugs vs. boltrope. Furler. Be wary of electrical mods. Many would-be sailors botch these.

MacGregor Mac26X Trailer sailing for adventure,
Last year I bought a new "coastal"two reef point main from blue water yachts. It actually came from sailwarehouse. $900 including postage two reef points extra battons. I like it. Bought the generator/genakker from peak for under $400 ordered off season arrived march 2016 I think. I recommend this sail! Bought a new oem doyle spinnaker and decided not to use it since I have the gennaker. Going to sell it. Since I have a seldon bowsprit I can fit a huge asymmetrical and will go that route (thoughts in progress, recommendations welcome, I do have a new continuous furler for the asmetrical and the torsion line........)

I would like to express my appreciation to those who contributed to my first thread of posting on this forum.... I had been reading, searching for anything I could read about Macgregor boats a month or two before I posted here and after due consideration satisfying to me.....I purchased a 26M today. As the old saying goes......my next happiest day will be the day I sell it but for now......... my intent is to sail it because I never have.......sailed. It is my hope that I will enjoy it as much as some of you seem to do.....wishing you all the best!

I am sure I will be back for more advice and again....thanks for all the replies!

Oh, and forgot to mention.....this particular boat that I found was a little different than most in that it had a 300 HP Merc on the back that caused it to sit a little lower in the water at the stern and would prop walk if you rolled on the throttle too fast.....would appreciate any input any of you might have...... is it normal for the sails to blow back at around 70 mph? ;-)

I was looking at the BWY website, in particular the stern seats as an addition to the boat I just purchased......can I get some comments from anyone that added these?

We heard them nicknamed 'babe seats'. Our Mac didn't have them but the Hunter does. They stow in a locker. Haven't used them yet.

Congrats on joining the Mac family MD! I seriously doubt you will be happy when it comes time to sell it. Even if I should "upgrade" to a larger boat in the future, I would certainly miss the ability to go all the places my Mac can take me.
