I've never rented a boat, but would imagine there must be some sort of insurance required, perhaps like renting a car? Have a great day!David

I would think, at the very least, the rental company has the keys to the rentor's car

Maybe you should have "rescued" the sailboat and left these misfits alone on the sandbar. Maybe, then, they'd have time to think through a more responsible response.
