First extended voyage

I've been sailing my 1979 O'Day 23' centerboard for 5 seasons and I'm thinking about an extended voyage from the Delaware Bay (Grrenwich)to the Chesapeake Bay (Fisher Island) via the C&D Canal. I've mostly daysailed and occasionally stayed overnight within 15 miles of my home port. I currently have a 2000 Yamaha Four cycle 8 HP outboard and one willing but inexperienced crew member (brother). I'm looking for a good guidebook and some advice to go over the necessities of an extended voyage (one week) from the end of September to first week of October. I appreciate any input. Thank you! Have Fun

Get a good chart book tke enough water, food and have fun. there are plenty of marinas to get into, though walking distance shopping is limited. The waters are protected so with a little common sense you should be fine. Hitting the tides correctly will make a world of difference, ride the out going tide and call the canal, they can tell you what the flow is when.

Greenwich to Chesapeake...

I've made a sail plan to circumnavigate

the Delmarva Peninsula in June/July of 2004. It's sailing clockwise so you'll have to reverse everything, but it may be useful. I bought the chart biik for the Chesapeak Bay as well as charts for the Delaware River south to the entrance to the Chesapeake at Cape Charles. I'll send you a copy of the sail plan if you'd like... E-mail me at hayden_jones@renolan.com. I'll send the Excel file (sail plan) to you as an attachment. Also, I learned that the best way to determine current direction in the C&D Canal is to use the Reedy Point DE tide charts. When the tide is rising at Reedy Point, the current is moving east to west through the canal (at 3 to 4 knots). When the tide is falling, the current reverses to West to East.
