First day of summer vacation

Both my wife and I are teachers. We spent our first day of summer vacation on Recess all day. It is great just to hear the slap of the sheets against the mast. Right now I have an obnoxious combination of B.O. and sunscreen and could not be happier. I have a meeting tomorrow to discuss a placement next year for a child, then take my son and his friend to see some baby tigers at the local theme park, and then we go sailing again. The only thing I am thinking about is getting back on the water.

I love the addiction we all share!

From those of us who haven't had a summer vacation...or more than two weeks off in a row in twenty or more years!

In 2008, to celebrate both of us turning 50, we decided to take 3 months off (May, June, July). Neither of us had ever had a summer off since public school. The first month we kicked around Europe (I'd never been before) then for June and July we just hung out at home which is a bit cottage-like, tinkered with stiff, and sailed. It was a great break.

Then in 2009 I got laid off in January. I kept going with freelance work, but conveniently avoided booking alot of work over the summer. Heh.

I'm still freelance and doing some marine repair work, this year my wife got laid off, but with a big fat settlement... she's now in chef school, and (wait for it) has the summer off.

It'll be hell to take a regular job again, and have to work over summer...

I just wish I had the months of spring off. Summer in Georgia and Florida is Hot Hot Hot.

Kenn is living the good life, even with trying circumstances. I love being a Teacher just for the day to day experiences. The Summer is just a bonus...so is the two weeks at Christmas and New Years.... and the week in Spring...the week in Fall... and the week at Thanksgiving... I will shut up now.



Edit to add. I spent my second day as I did the first. I took my camera, but I was to busy sailing to remember to take a picture. This is going to be a great summer!

I'll just be glad when I am working on the boat and not the house! Spent the most of the long weekend painting and grouting as we near the end of the renovation of two bathrooms. I had planned to spend at least one day on the boat, but had to grout the master bath in order to stay on schedule.

I'm with you Recess, my wife is a teacher and I'm self employed so we schedule our lives around sailing season. She has 4 days left, our kids have 9, then, we're on the boat 75% of the summer. Can't wait!

Wow, Summer sure starts early down there! A few decades ago when I was still teaching in a parochial school we were on summer vacation by the 3rd or 4th day of june.... but no one could afford to take the summer off unless they weren't married to another teacher...
Our days were usually scheduled around my performance schedule, since being a musician(even as little as us working-class players make compared to the stars) did then pay much better than I was making as a teacher.
Yesterday was the first time in 2 years I was able to take 'wind' out on the water. No pics, but still a fine day!

My son was diagnosed with strep throat today. That is a crime against a child during summer break! I have finished sewing on mast slugs on my main sail today so I have asked my wife if we could take our sickly child to the lake later just to "move" the sailboat. I am hoping when we get there he begs us to put up a sail.

We get out early.... but we have to go back early too. Property values are higher here but other than that the cost of living is very low. So two teachers can be comfortable on a realistic budget. It helps we both went back and got our Master's for a $8K bump in pay each.

This summer seems to be a return to sailing for a few families at our club. One member had not put his boat in the water in 3 years but he is determined to get the sails up at least once a week this summer. Another sold his stink boat and is very happy with the return to his sailboat that was collecting moss for two years.
