Get it surveyed! Even if you are reluctant to pay for one, you will be required to have a survey as a prerequisite to obtaining insurance. There are way too many potential problems with a boat of that vintage to risk.

BUC value on that boat is $10,600. to $11,300. In addition, you have pretty good electronics, furler, spinnaker. Comes down to condition of sails, cored DECK, and how long a dated engine might last. SURVEY is the key!

Hello Alex, I own a 28 ft 1979 O'day. I sail on Narragansett Bay, in RI. Looked at a lot of boats from NY,CT and MA. For my budget of $10,000, the O'day was the boat. Other boats were either in rough shape, or not what I was looking for. The interior is roomy, and I love the bulkheads, they clean up nice with a little lemon oil. I have replaceed both main sail and jib with Neil Pryde sails. She has a Pro-Furl furler, and a Yanmar diesel inboard. It does not have a sail drive as most did, from that year. My wife and I have had a few over night trips and were very secure and comfortable. You will not water ski with the Yanmar, but to get you from the mooring to the wind it is fine. The hull and topsides are very well made. The purchase price of the boat was way below market value, and Rudy from D&R Marine in Assonet, MA. has many parts for the O'day line. Hope this helps. My experience with the 28 ft has been great, and the 79 is a good value.

Oday 28 is a great boat, but I'd look for one with a diesel; even in this price range it is possible.

I have owned a 1979 O'day 28 since 1991, and think it is a good basic cruiser and well built. I have not experienced any hull or deck problems - no blisters as yet!

The interior design is not very clever, but can be modified.

The first thing I had to do was replace the OMC (Johnson outboard, basically) with a Yanmar 2GM. I am surprised that the one in the boat under consideration is still running, but I wouldn't count on it continuing to do so. The photos indicate a well cared-for boat. Sails are obviously an expensive item. You can check them for yourself before committing to a survey. The winches are all undersized, in my opinion. I have upgraded my mainsheet winches and moved the old ones to the halyards.


Note that the icebox in the awkward galley is not well insulated, and is next to the engine compartment.

There was no anchor roller on my boat, and no simple way to install one, without re-configuring the nav lights and deck hardware. The anchor locker is convenient, but only for a Danforth type.

If you plan to keep this boat for some time, it is worth upgrading - budget an amount at least equal to the purchase price for an engine! If you are not sure, then look for a boat with a diesel that has some life left in it.

What about the books on self survey including how to use a moisture meter. Seems like a reasonable alternative if the boat is
Ess than 15k and you are a handy man with tools and time.
