working on a bene first 405 with a perkins 4108 and throttle lever will move forward and back. Rpm respond to movement of lever. Cannot find a shift lever like on my old boat. Lever has small cup under knob that looks like it is suposed to be pulled up but looks like rod is fused to lever by corosion. Am I correct that this cup is supposed to be pulled up at the same time the lever is pushed forward??
Have disconected cable at transmission and i am able to shift to all positions. Cannot find an instruction manual so I am at a loss.
Also I am unable to stop engine with ignition key. Have to stick hand in filter body and choke it. Should the ignition switch kill the engine or the throttle cable?
Your help is welcomed
Cheers

You don't kill a diesel with the ignition key, you cut the fuel off, then turn off the key. You can find parts drawings here.

my 375 has a combo shift/throttle. Single lever, push it forward you are in forward and the amount of throttle is = to how far you push. Center it and you are in neutral, pull it back you are in reverse and the amount of reverse is based on how far it is pulled back. Additionally there is a little button on the shift lever that decouples the transmission from the throttle so you can press the button (shifts to neutral ) and rev till something breaks

My B411 (2000) has the same lever; This lever has now failed 4x (shame on me for sticking with it and its replacements for so long). Each time, the depressible red button on the axle fails to disengage internally. The result: the lever cannot be moved forward, incapacitating forward motor propulsion. Anyone else have this problem? I'll be exploring for different brand/model of lever; Any experience with proven alternatives would be appreciated.

There should be a push button to kill the engine, leave the key in the on position depress kill button until motor stops then turn the key off.

Four throttle failures is not a throttle assembly problem, it is a usage or installation problem. These volvo-penta linkages work well but rough handling or improper installation can mess them up.

Thanks for the reply. The assembly is sealed, thus, lubrication other than spraying lube around edges of red button seems out of the question (though I was never left with an operators manual for the unit so may have missed some PM recommendations). I have used the lever on four trips since the most recent repair/install making overuse an unlikely explanation. Installation appears to be limited by the config of the helm podium and appears to comply with the original intent. As far as use, I am not forceful with the lever and am ever less so, given the apparently fragile nature these lever assemblies have demonstrated in my use. One point: on the last occasion of failure, the lever had been switched to neutral (by depression of the red button) after motoring at low speed up to a mooring ball. The lever was returned to a slight forward position where it remained while lines were secured, prior to engine kill via fuel cut-out. Two days later, after engine warm up, and preparing to ease the forward line, I pulled the lever back to neutral, at which point I would typically feel the red button click, after which I can advance the lever to 'forward' and throttle up. It was at this point that the button failed to click and I was unable to move the lever forward out of neutral. Each previous occurrence was similar in sequence.

I have attached the installation manual with adjustment instructions. Make sure that your transmission shift rod at the engine is properly adjusted and in neutral prior to connecting and adjusting the Volvo Penta linkage. Make sure there are no other cables or parts in the engine bay jamming the range of motion of the transmission shift rod.
One point: on the last occasion of failure, the lever had been switched to neutral (by depression of the red button) after motoring at low speed up to a mooring ball.
The lever puts the transmission into neutral (and takes it out) the red button simply disconnects the transmission and allows the lever to become a throttle lever.
