Firefox vs Waterfox

Yeah, at first I thought, huh? I never heard of Waterfox until recently when I was having issues with Firefox. So I investigated. Yeah, there is a browser out there called WaterFox. I am currently using it.

It is strange because it looks and acts exactly like Firefox. But I have read that there are some options (I haven't seen or used them yet) that used to be in Firefox but were removed. Also, I have read that a lot of the Add-Ons in older Firefox that do not work anymore, work in Waterfox.

So is anyone using Waterfox? If you want to try it, here is the link. It will not do anything to your Firefox. It does port everything over from Firefox like Cookies, Personal Data, Add-Ons, Passwords, etc.

If I see anything earth shettering I will report back.

Thanks for that. I’m finding lots of holes in the functionality of Firefox nowadays. It hates for me to use Java. And I recently found a website (can’t remember what it was) that wouldn’t work properly but Internet Explorer would. And I NEVER use Internet Explorer.
Oh wait. I remember the site. It was a LEGO site. I’ll probably create a new post that is so far off topic that it has absolutely nothing to do with sailing. At all. Be warned. But it’s way cool!

Yea, I just switched from using Firefox for my e-mail (Hotmail) since it started acting up, dropping posts, won't download PDF's etc. I now use Chrome which I had always used for calendars, maps, etc. However, I sure get tired of the constant trolling from MS for their browser.
I finally had to replace my old netbook on the boat which was Windows XP. Of course, everyone quit supporting it and the paging and downloads were SO slow. Got a Win 10 small 2 in 1 with a SSD. All is good...except, of course, to run my Open CPN. I have to buy a new GPS and serial to USB cable since there are no drivers that will work on the old ones. Hope the AIS receiver still works! It's a back up, but still...

Rick, do you mean the PL2303 drivers? I have access to the old drivers if you need them.

Hotmail, not Firefox is most likely the culprit. I've used Firefox since the days when it was Netscape (except during a couple of years hiatus after Mozilla sold it to AOL who promptly destroyed it). I've never had any problem downloading email or getting attachments in the email browser, but I've always hated Outlook, preferring Mozilla's mail client Thunderbird (which was spun off from Mozilla a year or two ago)...never any problems with it either.
I suspect your email issues will go away if you replace your Hotmail address with gmail. Free...you can have multiple gmail accounts...and the best spam blocker on the 'net.

Fwiw, an article I read recently that offered advice to older people seeking employment: if your email address is a yahoo, aol, or hotmail account, replace it because employers consider those addresses to be only for old people who haven't kept up--which definitely isn't true of you! The author recommended gmail as a replacement.

And btw...I'm really curious about WonderFox...'cuz I'm not thrilled with some of the direction Firefox has been going lately.

Peggy, if you mean WaterFox instead of WonderFox, then download it and try it. It looks exactly like Firefox. I have to keep checking the About to make sure I am not using Firefox.

this is a 16 year old nerd designing your web browser mainly for power users. I'd not recommend you use it for banking as if probably only has minimal security. The designer admits that he designed it mainly for speed and nothing else.

Thanks Brian...I did mean WaterFox...My fingers got ahead of my brain on the keyboard.

Taking Bill's "word to the wise" advice to heart, I'll try it on my laptop instead of my office computer...I don't keep any financial or any other sensitive stuff on it.

It seems to have the same security we've been relying on for a while now.

Just 'cause a kid's writing it, that doesn't mean the kid isn't smart enough to do so.

Hotmail's working like a champ on Chrome. I do have a gmail account. I could migrate there but my e-mail address is probably in a thousand hands. Wouldn't want to go through the agony of trying to change that on everyone's device. I know I can forward it from HM to gmail. Besides, what to I care what employers think? I am SO far past that :waycool:
