why not?

if you keep your bird hunting shotgun locked up in the trunk of the car, unloaded, on your way to the bird hunting club.....why can't you store it on the boat the same way? Suppose the bird hunting club is on an island.

Long Guns vs. Hand Guns vs. Documentation

I havent lived in NYC in over 30 years. Way back when, you were allowed to own a long gun. Not a problem. It was almost impossible to get a hand gun permit though. Are long guns now illegal in NYC? As for documentation, I thought that documentation is just a federal registration that also shows clear title which makes it easier to enter and leave US waters. I dont know of any special privaleges that documentation gives you. Are there any? Tony B

Uh, Leon,,,,,,

I'll quote what you said; "As to carrying a weapon aboard, the officer emphatically recommended that all cruising vessels in the United States carry a weapon." That is completely different than the boarding crew telling you that you are legally within your rights to have a gun aboard.

Last comment about weapon aboard a Documented Vessel

Fred, BTW, If you are the guy that restored Eptiome, congratulations on a great job. I currently have Hunter 34 that is partially restored after Hurricane Rita damage. Have decided to sell it in its current state rather than finishing it out myself since i've moved up to the Hunter 420. Your project certainly provided ideas and motivation. On the Weapons aboard thread, The USCG Boarding Officer did state that he thought that all CRUISING vessel in US water should have a weapon onboard. I did not have any weapons aboard. My wife asked the innocent question and we received a surprising response that I thought to share with the boating community. This was about 9 months ago so please don't nail me to the cross but my recollection of and how I perceived his response was as I've stated. I would expect most if not all cruising vessels are Documented so I feel comfortable in answer the original question - I won't repeat it - as I have done. The Officer had just seen my papers and knew my boat was Documented but I'm not certain that Documentation is necessary. I would ask anyone questioning the validity of my statements contact your USCG and ask for an official opinion. Please let me know if I've been mis-informed.

Tom S- for quieting Halibut was my justification to my wife

to get a stainless shotgun to have aboard. I have never had to use it. Nice N Easy: The states rights interpretation of the Constitution gives States (and consequently cities) the right to make laws on subjects not covered by federal law. Whether or not they can totally ban guns is the DC case which the Supreme Court is expected to rule on soon. Joe S
