I just purchased an 81 Catalina that requires a complete overhaul both inside and out. While I was painting out the engine compartment, I noticed that the top rear engine cover (the one under the counter) has a burn area in it the size of a softball. The burn area is located directly over the exhaust pipe where it turns downward into the wet exhaust. Although the exhaust pipe is wrapped in heat resistant material, I think the pipe is too close to the wood cover. I have since built a new wood cover and lined it with 1/8" lead sheating. Finding burnt wood anywhere on your boat is quite unnerving! Can anyone think of a reason why I should not lower this exhaust pipe an inch or so by shortening the hose into the wet exhaust, thus getting it away from the wood? Thanks for any help.
