Finished the A/C installation

Installed a 16,700 BTU reverse cycle A/C in my '92 H33.5. I installed the compressor on a shelf I built under the Nav desk. The "brain" of the system is under that shelf (visible in the pic) and the thru-hull and pump are under the settee just forward of the Nav desk. The thru-hull doesn't leak and the A/C puts out cold air so I guess I did something right! I built the enclosure this past weekend. I used a leg from an old teak coffee table to make the radiused corner piece. It matches the existing Hunter corners perfectly! I still need to sand it down and oil it. That (and a little age) should bring it closer to the existing teak finish. I'll hang a fire extinguisher (or something) on the bukhead to hide the holes and discoloration from the shelf that I had to remove. Just need to shorten the 2 settee cushions by a couple of inches and I'm done.Toms/v Orion's Child

Good Idea

To put it under the nav station I've never seen one put there. Couple of friends have theirs in the aft cabin on the hanging shelf back there but both complain about hearing the compressor come on and off all night. How and where did you run the ductwork to the aft cabin?

I thought it would be a good spot for it. I don't really spend much time sitting at the desk and I can still use it, I just have to sit a little bit sideways. We used to keep a trashcan under there before so I couldn't sit straight at the desk anyway. I wanted to build the shelf level with the fiberglass shelf under the desk so I could tuck the unit as far in as possible and still leave room for the plumbing and ductwork. This caused me to raise the floor of the desk by .75" to accomodate the height of the A/C unit. The ducting to the aft cabin goes through the bulkhead into the hanging locker (I installed shelves in mine a while ago) and out the aft side of the locker into the cabin. The ducting forward goes through the storage areas behind the settee back. I installed a "T" just forward of the "bottle well" and ran a duct up. A wooden floor register (oak finish, soon to be teak stain) from Home Depot is mounted on the shelf above the cabinet to vent cold air into the main cabin. From the "T" it goes forward through the undersink cabinet, through the portside locker in the forward cabin and out the other side into the V berth. I have a lot of 4" diameter disks from my hole saw. I need to figure out what I can use them for, any ideas? I can post more pics next Monday if you are interested.Toms/v Orion's Child

Exactly the place where I put mine in our 1993 33.5. I felt like it was the best choice. I never sat down facing the nav table anyway... it's kind of a usless area with the radius at the bottom. I placed two vents on the side of the new cabinet blowing across the settee. I struggled with running the flex somewhere else. My thoughts are to run the 4" felx hose under the settee and install the vents, one on each end. Aft was easy!I also cut the hole at the bottom of the front pannel. Good place for some shoes. Nice job Tom.
