How do I fine tune the mast and its corresponding rigging? Fractional 7/8 with 2 slightly sweptback spreaders. The mast looks very straight and there is no slack on any of the rigging even on the downwind side when sailing. So what is next? Should I leave it alone and go sailing? Comments...

check weather helm

On a reach your leeward shourd should be 'just' slack. Next check mast rake. You should not be wrestling with the rudder. If you let it go on a reach, it should slowly round up into the wind and go into irons. If your boat turns away from the wind, your mast is too far forward. If it rounds up quickly, it is too far back. Loosen your shrouds (and backstay if you have one) and tighten the forestay, then go sailing again and check weather helm. You may also want to avoid a perfectly balanced rudder, as your boat will then sail away on its own without you if you fall overboard.

Compare with Toss?

How does this book compare with Brian Toss' book. So far his is the only explanation of tuning a rig I think I can follow without coaching. Geoff
