Finding the compresion post block?

After reviewing the archive postings on the possibility of the block in the bilge below the compression post softening, I decided to check mine today on my 85 C 30. But I couldn't find it. The bottom of the wooden compresion post sits on about a half inch fiberglass base at floor level. When I removed the bilge boards and checked the space between the bottom of the bilge and the compression post, the area between the floor level and the bilge bottom is entirely covered with what appeaars to be thin white epoxy and I can see no wood. So, either the former owner coated the wood with epoxy- in which case it appears impossible to check the condition of the block without chiseling the epoxy away- or I'm missing another place to look to check on the block. There is no cracking of the glass at the bottom of the compression pole, although there is about 1/4 inch of deck compression at the mast base, and a few crazing cracks in the glass support beam. I think I can conclude that the mast base block is still sound. Any thoughts on finding the missing mast block or is this what its supposed to look like on every C 30?

compression post block

I'd be concerned about the deck compression but it sounds like someone may have already attempted a fix. I'd guess that someone replaced the compression block after covering it with epoxy or just painted the old block with epoxy to cover a problem (hope not). Drill a small hole in the epoxy to check what's in there. You should find some dry wood. If it's wet you've got a problem & the block will have to be replaced. If it's okay just fill the drilled hole with Marine-tex or epoxy. Good luck. Ron 86 C30TRBS
