Folks to sail with

I have a sailboat in Marina del Rey but I live an hour away in Pomona. Consequently it is hard for me to find folks to sail with. I put an ad on Craigslist but all I got were people that wanted me to teach them to sail. I don't want to teach.

I'm looking for sailors with some experience who are interested in sailing on my boat. Where can I find them?
I am a part of a sailing club in Marina del Rey that was started just for the purpose of matching skippers with people who want to crew on sailboats. The Marina Sunday Sailing Club meets the second and fourth Sunday of each month, except the fourth Sunday in November and December due to holidays. We have brunch at 10 am on the patio at Burton Chace Park, make boat assignments at 11 am, and then sail all afternoon. We have a dock party upon our return, wine and cheese etc., around 3:30-4:00 pm in the Winter, 5:00 in the Summer.

A unique aspect of our club is that we do most all activities on the set schedule of the second and fourth Sunday of the month, our sail days. We have club members that travel from as far away as Perris, CA.

We cruise to Catalina, Long Beach, Channel Islands on three to four day trips during the daylight savings time months. We also hold training classes throughout the year on the fourth Sunday meeting.

Cost is $5.00 per guest for the day. Our membership year runs from May 1 - April 30 each year. Cost is $100 per crew member, and $50 for skippers who sail at least six times per year.

Please come check us out. We are known as the friendliest club in the marina. Ask for Floyd and Janine at the membership desk when you come.

Man, I wish we had an invite to go out on something for a couple days. My wife is not much help when it comes to sailing but she does keep everyone well fed.

I am guessing those of us who only have small 26 footers all like to get in a big boat once in a while to keep the dreams alive. We enjoy our Mac but it is nice to see a real boat once in a while.

Would love to fly to Florida for a few days of sailing. I have a friend who's 38' ketch is out of the water now but I scrambled to make time to go out with him. After all he was the one who gave me the bug.

When I had a B235, i knew only a few people who would go sailing- well, at least once anyway. I joined SOS (Singlesonsailbpoats.org), a 600-plus member group moslty in the Chesapeake Bay area. I wanted to get more use out of my boat, and some time on some bigger boats. The first year in the club I tripled the use of my boat, got bigger-boat cruising, and some bareboat charters world-wide. So, I'd say, join a club and sail- and make good friends in the process!

Remember, we here are fanatics, so we have to keep this in mind. I have found in the 35 some odd years of sailing, I have found and identified several types of crew. I am a fanatic, meaning its a way of life for me. I have had people come out, first timers, I really like most of the time as they seem to really appreciate the whole experience, however they usually, are one timers, then there is family, a little difficult as they all seem to want to go the same time, what was said earlier about commitment is big also. I am going every weekend, and when I ask some one on a say wed, yea not sure I'll let you know, one or 2 of those with me and a 38' boat is not a problem, but sometimes i end up with 4 of those, then my sister husband and daughter want in, and more times than not I end up alone anyway. So solo is best option sometimes. Every once in long while, I bring someone who is crazy for it, and will go at the drop of a hat, but, eventually a relationship or something changes and they fall back. So what I have found works best for me is I tell mostly everyone, you have an open invite, don,t wait for me to call I am here every weekend, please just call me , to let me know what time you will be there.
