Finally got cover off MD6A primary/coarse fuel filter now what?

I finally pried the "top hat" cover off (having removed the bolt) by
inserting a thin screwdriver into the bolt hole.

Came off easily - wish I'd thought using a screwdriver before now,
trying to remove the cover any other way defeated me.

The gauze mesh is black as a dark night in January .. so it certainly
needs cleaning.

The manual says to remove the gauze mesh and wash in fuel oil (diesel) -
is the mesh held in place by a clip or does it just lift off?

I think that I saw a clip when I got the cover off yesterday - didn't
have time to investigate further.

I am *very* keen not to to **** up my engine now that the weather is
finally getting better.... :)

Thanks as always for any advice

If it's black, it's definitely not helping. When I did that, my motor refused to start when I was about 5 miles from my dock up some skinny shallow creek.I remember the same exact thought when the lid finally came off. It's like a chinese puzzle. Not so much work once it comes off. More work figuring out How it comes off.I used spray engine cleaner and it blasted right off of that delicate screen. I also made a new gasket from automotive gasket material and then smeared a thin coat of gasket dressing on it.Cant remember what else is in there. I think thats it.

Thanks Roy - but I'm still confused!

I think you are saying that there is some disassembly needed in order to
remove the gauze mesh?
Am I correct in my vague memory that there is a C-shaped clip holding
the screen in place?
Can you give any further details?

Also not clear what you mean about spray engine cleaner "blasting off"
the mesh - do you mean that it damaged it or that it is the right
cleaner to use?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks as always,

No, go get a can of engine cleaner spray. Comes with the little red straw on the nozzle. brbrThe fine mesh should come out really easily. Think it's just sitting in there. brbr
Spray mesh, black stuff dissapears. brbrDon't remember any clips.brbrRoy

Probably the same stuff.Carb cleaner is probably more appropriate if there is a difference.good luck.Did you get the screen out easily?roy
