I finally pried the "top hat" cover off (having removed the bolt) by
inserting a thin screwdriver into the bolt hole.
Came off easily - wish I'd thought using a screwdriver before now,
trying to remove the cover any other way defeated me.
The gauze mesh is black as a dark night in January .. so it certainly
needs cleaning.
The manual says to remove the gauze mesh and wash in fuel oil (diesel) -
is the mesh held in place by a clip or does it just lift off?
I think that I saw a clip when I got the cover off yesterday - didn't
have time to investigate further.
I am *very* keen not to to **** up my engine now that the weather is
finally getting better....
