Fin or Wing Keel ?

Concidering the purchase of a Catalina 27 (1989) and I have the following question: It appears as thought there is only a 6-inch difference between the Fin and Wing Keel design on the 27. What is the advantage (other than the 6 inch draft) or disadvantage of the Wing Keel and likewise of the Fin Keel? Does the fin keel have more or less stability? Thank You

Pointing Ability

Tom, The main benefit of the fin keel is pointing ability. If you find yourself close hauled often, or if you race, then this will be important to you. The trade off with the fin keel is a deep draft. Many people who sail in shallow water areas need as little draft as possible. If the 6" difference isn't a big deal where you sail, then I'd go with the fin. A little better pointing ability never hurt! I hope this helps. Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632
