After pulling the boat out of the water for the winter, I noticed large chunks of thick paint flaking off the wing keel. How do I repair this without completely removing all the paint down to the bare metal on the whole keel?

Sand blast it...

Paint was coming off my keel in chunks when I got it too. I rented a portable sand blaster and hosed her down. Be sure and wear a mask. Went pretty quick really. Be sure she stays dry and prime her within an hour or two after blasting her down to bare metal and you shouldn't have much trouble with rust flaking your paint off for quite a while. Don't blast the fiberglass.

I Wire Ground It

Lee, I needed to do the same thing 2 years ago on my '85 H23. I used the interlux 2001 2 part epoxy solution. There's several threads here (I learned how to do it on this site). What I did though was to use a round wire grinder attachment to a drill and ground the keel down to a bright metal finish. I did find that I had places where the original white epoxy finish did was still in tack even with the grinding. I just left it and epoxied the 5-6 coats over it. 2 years later, I have very small areas where rust appears (dime size) so I just spot treat it. This is sufficient for me. The moral is that I don't think you have to take the whole keel to bare metal, only the rusted and blistering (rust underneath) areas. Good luck, /Chuck Michel S/V Windsongs '85 H23
