o.k. I checked the archives and see that most people are just pumping the old oil out. the main problem i had though was the filter, which on my engine is a screen. it sounds like some models have a screw on filter. how do you clean the screens or doesn't anybody. also, why pump the oil out instead of draining it.

We are confused

I guess that most of us are confused about what you are asking about. I have no idea what you mean by a bolt and screen. My Yanmar engine has a screw-on oil filter that is easily accessed on my 1981 H33. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

It has a 12 h.p. yanmar. it has a pan drain with bolt which is very difficult to access and it has a oil srceen for a filter as opposed to screw on, probably due to the year boat.

the filter_

it sound like you have a yanmar YSE 12_ the filter is a different then it you may expect, that little handle in the front of the engine needs to be rotated on a reqular basis when the oil is hot. It is actually not a screen as you may expect _ but a series on plates. (looks a whole lot like a stator of a small electric motor) if you take it out of the engine ( make sure you have a new gasket ) you will find there is nothing to clean, actually it is a pretty trick little device and self cleaning in that rotating that t bar actually cleans the plates

oil change

Jon, you said in your post that its very difficult to access the oil drain plug. Thats why everybody pumps the oil out of the dipstick hole. There are several pumps, both manual and electric, available from West Marine/BoatUS etc. Its true that draining is better because you can get every drop out but most people find it just too much of a nusciance. Be sure you run the engine for a while to warm the oil up or you wont be able to suck it out.
