I have some woodwork below in which different owners have placed items and them removed them. Thus, leaving small screw holes in the teak. I'd like to fill those holes in, sand and oil the teak. Does anyone know of a filler that can match the teak color and texture or should I just go with a generic wood filler compound and maybe add some color to try and match? Thoughts? Thanks

BrianD, There is a putty type wood filler packaged

in two ounce jars in a wide range of colors form blond to almost black. The other method if you are a purist about these things is you can drill them out and bung them with teak. No matter what approach you take you can make them inconspicuous but you can't make them vanish completely.

I believe that Minwax makes a line of those

tinted wood fillers (comes in a little round jar). They also make a 'stainable' wood filler. Pretty sure there are other brands too.

Bungs

Depending on the size of the holes and the color of the teak, you may be able to buy teak "bungs" and just tap them into the holes. I had some interior handrails on a previous boat that had holes where they screwed through the headliner and into the base of the exterior rails. I found some teak bungs a bit larger, drilled the holes out a tiny bit, and banged the bungs (that has a nice ring to it....) into the holes. Looked good.

Most home supply/hardware stores have.....

Brian: Most home repair/hardware stores sell putty/filler and many different colors. I would check out one of your local places to see what you can find. I would agree with Warren, that you may want to consider bungs if the holes are on the larger size. Just drill out the holes, pound in the bung, shave off the excess with a sharp chisel, sand and finish off.

Sawdust & Wood Glue

I have seen woodworkers use this trick. They would take similar-colored sawdust and create a paste of sawdust and wood glue (I guess you can get it is a couple of colors). They would then fill in the holes/cracks, sand it, seal it with oil or varnish. Can't tell the difference!

The holes are small screw holes...

Like the type used to hold mic clips for the VHF. Very tiny. I think a bung would be an over kill. I'll check out the local Lowes/Home Depot and see what they have. Haven't been in one of those stores for a while. Thanks guys...

Just get a little end grain off cut of teak , split off some splinters

about the right size to over fill the hole, dip them in a little glue and tap them in. You may have to whittle a point on them but that will make very small bungs without the need to drill.

Bungs and Ross

I like Ross's suggestion and plan to use that in my hatch question on another thread. Bungs can be bought, but you can by a plug cutter that will make them - providing you have some scrap teak.
