Filling fuel tank problems on H36

Wondering if anyone besides me has problems filling their fuel tank. I'm not sure it is a problem with just my boat or if this is a problem on other Hunters.

In order to fill the tank without overflowing the flow has to be pinched way back - somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 gal per minute or less. Some of the marinas have high flow pumps and it is impossible to pinch the flow back this far and it ends up being a nightmare trying to keep diesel from spilling into the lake :cussing:. I haven't investigated the fuel tank vent to see if there is a problem there since this has been going on since the boat was new. Getting to the point where I'm just siphoning out of 5 gallon cans rather then going to a marina. This summer we plan on ~ 1200 nm r/t up to Lake Superior and back to Chicago. Consequently I would like to top the tank off whenever we make a stop. Can't see filling 5 gallon cans and siphoning every fill up.

No

Not really but when close to full it does like coming out the vent on the deck,
try one of those whistle things or some thing that goes on the hose and have heard they really work.
I usually can tell when when almost full with a sound change telling me it is
close to full.

Nick - my problem is that no matter how full or empty the tank is it will still over flow out of the tank fill if the flow is over 1 gpm or thereabouts. (not the vent). Sounds like if you don't have a problem then I may have a vent problem. Looks like one more thing to put on the list for this spring.

OK

I would trace the fill hose and vent hose for some kind of bad turns or twist or maybe kink or something wrong and you are the first one I have heard of that problem.
Since it;s like that since new and how the 2 hoses run under and maybe bad routing from factory,I do use jugs for pre filtering most of the time but do fuel at Marina's many ttimes with out any problems like you have.

Re: OK

I agree with Nick - we haven't had any issues like you. You may have a blockage/kink in either the fill hose or the vent. We routinely fill from a high speed commercial hose without any problems

I haven't had this problem either and have refueled at a number if marinas over the past 6 months. I go slow when I get near my estimated gallons I need and nearly always overlow the vent to some degree no matter how careful I try to be. I have a whistle device but couldn't figure how to get to it to install on the vent line. I'd check the fill hose for kink and the vent.

Fuel

Well he has his work cut out looking under at his hoses for sure, when fueling
I will see the redish fuel peeping out the vent for sure and usually have a fuel spill rag from the fuel dock people ready sitting right at the vent.

Thanks for the reply's. Sounds like I have a vent problem since I've never seen anything come out of the vent - just foams up and spills out of the fuel fill whenever the flow gets too high regardless of the tank level..

You Bet

I think you got your problem and try disconnecting it at the tank and blow out with air.

Maybe spiders in the vent. Happens a lot. Although those fuel dock hoses are intended to handle some power yacht that is taking on 5,000 gallons of fuel and not take all day to do it. So we sailboats with out 35 gallon tanks do have to throttle back the hoses so as to not spill.

Spiders may be the answer. We have major spider invasions every summer. Never thought of that.

could of been dirt dobbers from the factory day one they love boats and if one sits very long they make it there new found home and always build in the through hulls and any orthere thing that is like that so you may have one in the vent line......

Never had this problem. Fills as fast as I can pump diesel in.

But my heads sink would not empty when the boat was new. Found that the draining house was bent upwards behind the chart table. Had to loosen it and rethred it so it was falling all the way down. Fully ok now. I have actually heard about other boats with the same problem.

I think you must chek the diesel filling. Must be soething wrong tere.
