The interpretation that the position of the hands of the clock determines the numerical value of the clock is potentially correct. The interpretation that the number of clocks determines the numerical value of the clocks is also potentially correct. The rules of the mathematical system were not defined as being one or the other, therefore it is impossible to determine which answer necessarily must be correct.

Same with number of bananas vs. number of bunches & # of sides vs. # of geometric figures.

The fact that the ONLY way to determine the value of the symbols in the last line makes the latter interpretation the valid one.

The last equation is what is throwing everyone, even me, overboard. It has been modified. The clock shows 2, the banana have 3, and the pentagon has 11 sides as opposed to 15. But it was fun anyway. Although allan12210 guessed it first, I selected weinie's because he showed his work.

That always happened to me in school. Only I usually didn't show my work and got the wrong answer too. At least I was consistent.

Pentagon is kinda "spooky". Very difficult to draw laying out with a straight edge and drawing compass.
The secret to draw was the "Golden Section" or a Gambler's optimum betting strategy.

38 is the correct answer I believe
The geometric shapes adjusted to be a multiplier of 11 as there is a missing square
The clocks are adjusted to 2 each based on the time being displayed
The banana's are adjusted to 3 each are adjusted to 3 from 4
2+3+3*11=38
