is this the math forum?
If a boat can close reach at 10 degrees to the true wind, and the true wind is at 90 magnetic and the deviation and variance are +10 degrees, what is the max SPEED the boat can attain against a current of 1 knot at 270 degrees?

you also need to know this ditty...one banana, two banana, three banana, four.
Yes, we have no bananas. But I gotta say 67 because Rick486 says so.

Brian D ................. give some off the wall answer and see how many people get themselves banned from the site for a week or so :yikes:.

Then if I actually do write it down -
3A = 45
A=45/3=15

2B+A=23
2B+15=23
2B=23-15
B=8/2=4

B+2C=10
4+2C=10
2C=6
C=3

C+2B+A=3+8+15= yep, it's still 26
Welcome back to high school algebra.

oops, C+B +BxA=67

Ass-u-me-d the operands were all +. Didn't look closely enough.

each 'shape' in the first row has 15 sides each.... 15+15+15=45 ....check
Each bunch of bananas has 4 each.... 4+4+15=23 ... check
Each clock says '3 o'clock'... 4+3+3=10.... check.
The last row...
The clock says '2 o'clock', the banana bunch has only 3 bananas and the shape has 11 sides only.
2+3+3*11= 38 (don't screw up the order of operations)

If you put a gun to my head and said "figure this out or die" ... I'd say just go ahead and pull the trigger, save us some time.

Bingo!

The interpretation that the position of the hands of the clock determines the numerical value of the clock is potentially correct. The interpretation that the number of clocks determines the numerical value of the clocks is also potentially correct. The rules of the mathematical system were not defined as being one or the other, therefore it is impossible to determine which answer necessarily must be correct.

Same with number of bananas vs. number of bunches & # of sides vs. # of geometric figures.

The last equation is what is throwing everyone, even me, overboard. It has been modified. The clock shows 2, the banana have 3, and the pentagon has 11 sides as opposed to 15. But it was fun anyway. Although allan12210 guessed it first, I selected weinie's because he showed his work.
