not a big deal
First...when in doubt...any dock or tie up is ok. Second...I did this once a year. This year it was from very high winds that did not allow me to back in. I could have gone front in, but where is the fun in that! Last year it was a soloniod gone bad. I had to anchor in the lake till the wind wicked up at 4:00 am. Then I ghosted in. In all cases, I have a lines ready all over he boat (37' Irwin). Some are cleated off, some are free. And I have two poles. I simply sail as close to the pole nearest my space, grab it with the pole or line with the idea of getting a line over it to stop the boat. Boat stopped. Miller time. Then after the beer, I inch worm my way to my slip and using one pole as a fulcrum, pull it in. This year I did it in 35 knot winds. And as soon as I tied it up, the wind stopped like someone turned off the light. Go figure. We make it a practice to do this anyway, on almost all sailings. It's the challenge, can I do it thing.
