Every year me and my friends tackle another large project on our 85 h23. This year I want to restore the deck fiberglass. It is stained and oxidated. I purchased the Vertglas retorer kit (recomended by other owners, not sales people) any tips suggestions, techiques you would recomend? I noticed how shiney and new Brian and Steph's h25's topside looked.

vertglas

You might want to spend some time reading the archives about vertglas and products similiar . I think that the number of people who like these products is equal to the number who swear to never use such a product again . I dont have any real numbers for you but I am in the latter group and prefer to use an oxidation remover , polish and then wax . Good luck with whatever system you decide on , Mike

Acrylic Finishes

I've tried them all on my 1983 h34. They make an older vessel with tired gelcoat look like new (so it's a great thing to do before you sell it) I'd never put it on a newer vessel with healthy gelcoat. It is very difficult to remove once you apply it. Vertglas WILL TURN YELLOW in two to three years. Poliglow, a competitior does not seem to have this effect. Neither of these will help you with stains and I would not recommend that you use it on decks. It will make your hull and cabin side look like new. I've seen it used in cockpits and certain sun tan oils react with leaving a mess. Black streak remover will disolve it (remember that when it's time to remove it)

Deck finishing

Gotta be careful with the deck and cockpit. Don't put a high gloss finish anywhere you intend to walk, sit or crawl. It gets too slippery. What we have used successfully is Johnson's Future Acrylic Floor Finish. It seals the surface and provides a moderate sheen. Its also good to walk on. It can discolor a little, but cleans nicely. We tried Island Girl non-skid sealer. That did not provide acceptable results. I won't go into details, but we disposed of it. Quickly. Very quickly. For the topsides, we've had great success with the PolyGlow kit. The PolyPrep worked great in removing the oxidation and built up dirt. The PolyGlow was easy to apply and looks great after a few years. I can't tell if it yellows since we have a beige H25.5.

Once a great Web site

There once was a great Web site by a fellow who did a major restoration of an h23. Tons of great information, including his use of Verglas. Unfortunately, the site is now just a skeleton page. It appears teamseacats has gone to another servor and is slow getting everything up. Hopefully someone will let us know if the h23 site is up and running again. Mac
