Just a note I forgot. There is an excellent review of the four major materials for boats (Cold Molded Wood, Fiberglass, Steel and Aluminum) in Dave Gerr's book "The Nature of Boats" which I recommend highly for the studious.

Cutty Sark

I don't know about the Cutty Sark, but most of her metal contemporaries were wrought iron. Very corrosion resistant, and the weight not much different than the massive wood scantlings used in trans-oceanic cargo ships.
