The bow section of the deck on my ODay 22 is spongy. I have decided to cut the deck open and replace the core. My question is since the new core is going to be completely sealed, is marine grade plywood necessary ? how about standard exterior grade?

Balsa

Why not use end grain balsa? It is much lighter than plywood. See what they used on the original and go with that.

give yourself some room

before cutting into your deck, measure at least 3 inches away from toe rails and the side of the cabin. you will need the room when you start to bevel the sides of the deck for reconstruction. balsa is best and is usually in a checkerboard style for easy use. you can find balsa in different thicknesses at a fiberglass supply house. good luck.
