Fiberglass cutlass bearing???

No question here, for info or discussion only! Had to replace my cutlass bearing. The existing one I removed was fiberglass with rubber on the ID. Thought this was weird. Skeg ID is 1-1/4" spot on. Anyway, I installed new bronze/rubber bearing. Thought some of you might find this interesting.

The cutlass bearings with the fiberglass (or other non metallic) shells are easier to remove when it comes time to replace them. With some gentle tapping, they slide out of the strut in one piece. The metallic shells tend to fuse to the strut often making it necessary to cut them in order to free them from the strut. Otherwise there is no difference in utility between the two types.
