I am the owner of a 1993 Catalina 270 LE hull #43. This past winter I shrink-wrapped my boat for the winter season as I always do. When I removed the cover this spring, I was surprised to see a chip of gel coat (about the size of a thumb nail)and cracking condition on the aft port section of the hull in the area that transitions into the stern not quite at the radius of the curve. The existing condition is nine inches below the rub rail and in the same area parallel to the back stay mounting plates. I also have the same cracking condition showing on the starboard side not as severe but noticeable.I inspected the backing plates and no noticeable cracks nor rusted bolts were noted from inside the rear storage areas. I was not given any type of specific analysis by my marina but I am anticipating an expensive repair bill.Any opinion or root cause for this concern and corective/preventation action is appreciated. Thank You

Probably cosmetic

There evidently has been some stress in the areas you mentioned that caused the cracking (crazing), but it's likely just a cosmetic surface gel coat issue. When boats get older the areas that get stressed or impacted often show tiny cracks. You could live with them or grind out the area and fill with gel coat. Overfill a little, then wet sand to a smooth finish. You can do this yourseld to save money if you have the time. I have several areas that need attention on my 1986 Catalina - hopefully I'll get to those spots before summer! Best of luck! Trevor
