Now that my 34 hunter is back in the parking lot(some say on the hard) I started cleaning and waxing with a 6inch polish/sander. Last spring we put new stripes on the side and was told that acetone would work to clean before installation of the stripes. The area I wiped with the acetone took off whatever was there and I could apply 10 coats of wax and it would not cover up the jagged line where I wiped. What on earth is going on. Any idea what the acetone did? Shouldnt a fresh coat of wax clean that area up and blend in with the rest? Maybe it was vertglased or something like that before I bought it and the acetone ate off the vertglas and I cant replace it? I know acetone is some nasty stuff but I thought it was ok to clean with. Also there appears to be alot of streaking, odd shapes and imperfections in the gel coat. I can't feel these but if I look down the side of the boat they are very obvious. Any thoughts on any of this? The sides feel smooth as glass but at an angle I see alot of blotches that I cant feel. I tried to rub one out with compound but nothing happened. Thanks

Fiberglass work

Maybe someone did some fiberglass work on the boat??? The areas that you say that have streaks or imperfections could be re-gelcoated areas that didn't match the original?? Hope this isn't the case, but just a thought. Roc

Another Thought

How long have you owned this vessel? Perhaps a previous owner used Vertglas or a similiar acrylic gelcoat restoration system thats degrading. When it's time to strip that stuff it stripes appear from when it was originally applied. Barry

hull streaks

We used a product called "new glass" on our 34. Worked well and lasted 2 or 3 years. If someone used something similar on yours, you might try wiping it down with a mild solution of water and plain old household ammonia.

Gelcoat streaks

Craig, I have noticed on previous boats that I have used acetone on, that the area cleaned looks different at an angle, than the rest of the fiberglas. You might try cleaning spots on the rudder to see if you have reproduced the splotcheness; if so then clean the entire area with acetone to see if it becomes uniform; if so, the clean the entire hull with acetone to get a uniform surface. Regarding Vertglas, which I use and like, a water based cleaner can be purchased that can take it all off. No big deal in terms of effort. Good Luck, John Blakely

More Information

I talked to Marine-Store about my problem. They thought I might have something like vertglas on my hull and I ordered their remover to take all of it off and think about what to replace it with. Either more vertglas of plain old wax. My concern about vertglas is that from rubbing from fenders and just wear and tear you will have to spot in sections periodically. He would not commit to how even these areas would fill in. And they told me that after about 5 yrs. you will want to remove and start over. Also if the boat isnt totally clean the dirt will show up as streaks. I like the shiney finish but it may be more of a hassle than i want. Will let you know how easy/hard this is to take off as I will receive my remover this week. Craig

Vertglass

John - what can you tell me about Vertglass? How is it used? Where can it be purchased? I've seen mentions of this product in the past but now I really need to know what the stuff can do (or should I just plan to paint...). Thanks, Al Brito S/V Showtime Jacksonville, FL

Vertglas Remover Update

I received my remover and used according to the instructions. It is easy to work with. Just takes time. I found that a 3m pad worked best in removing the vertglas. They recommend a brush so I dont know if this will be a problem down the road.Use a brush over any vinyl striping as the pad will scratch the vinyl. I plan on removing all of it before the snow flies. Maybe alittle snow on monday here in mpls. I figure the 20 below temps. will kill any mold and mildew still lurking inside. I estimate about 3 hours a side on our 34. I will sit on this over the winter and decide in spring if to reapply vertglas or wax. I do like the shiney finish.Craig
