I wrote an article about fenderboards on my blog. I've used them previously. I'm making up another set up for my boat, since a friend "adopted" my previous set.

I carry one...

for docking along side a wharf at locations with ugly pilings. It's a Cetol'd spruce 2x4 4 foot long, with polyvinyl end pieces made for standing it off a hull. Two lines centered down the verticle face to tie it off on the life lines or toe rail. Most effective when centered on the piling on the outward side with two large fenders placed near the ends between it and the boat, with dock lines made snug to hold the boat against this rigging against the piling.

I inheritted some with our new boat and when stern to in a slip they went perfectly around the swim ladder to protect the stern and rudder. I was really happy to have them when I needed them and I am sure they will come in handy again. I don't have the measurements etc and I know the PO had used them at his dock, but he must have designed them to protect the stern when stern to docking.

I have two but only use them against Piles. They jump the dock if they are used in a slip and a wake causes a little roll. Mine are each about 5 feet long, 1&1/2" thick and about 5+ inches wide. I made them out of 2X6"s.

I have 2 sets use one on each side of the boat in the slip. They each have 6 inch fenders, 5 foot long pressure treated 2 x 4's secured in the center of the fenders, and they do a great job of protecting the boat. I adjust the fenders so the 2 x 4's are about 3 inches below the rub rail.
