Back in the fall I offered to send a prop to a guy for him to use on his boat. The agreement was that he would pay for shipping and then if he used the prop pay me $125.00 or return the prop. I sent him the prop via his son's California address. He paid the shipping but nothing else.

Well, this guy has vanished. No answer to multiple emails. Cell phone rings with no voicemail. He has since deleted the original message from SBO.

The person's name is Luis Hardy and he is from California. Do not do any business with this person unless you are prepared to lose money.

I do not recall. And since the original was deleted I cannot find it. The subject had to do with needing a prop and I replied that I had one if he wanted to try it out.

It is a shame when people take advantage of a good deed. I have no idea what has transpired but some members of our group here are over 60ish. Let's just hope he is being a dirt bag.

Not trying to say anything other sometimes people pass away. People past 60 seem to this more often than people in there 40s. I know we have some very healthy people past 60 here, but you never know, it is a possibility.

We are all doing away with that golden years stigma just by getting the boats on the water. I am only 44, but I am very impressed by the 70 somethings we have here that sail all the time. I want that to be me!

Same thing happened over on the Wooden Boat Forum. An active and well thought of member took a brand new, unused, diesel cabin heater in trade for fixing some wiring. The rewiring job consisted of saying, "Everything in the boat is toast and has to be re-done." He then disappeared along with the heat exchanger he was also supposed to have cleaned.

Forums make it easy to think we're all one big happy family but these things happen even in the best of families.

Trust but verify.

I was just playing with you. I hope you don't feel bad about it. I'm one of those 70+ that gets to sail just about whenever my wife and I feel like it. I highly recommend it.

That stinks. I don't mind helping a guy out, but it can be tough to protect your own interests. I had a sail damaged once at the beginning of a season. I have a spare main that I have offered to loan someone in a similar situation, but there is no way I was going to loan a sail in good condition out without a deposit up front. There is also no way I am selling it for a song, as someday I could rip my main and be ruing the day I did so.

First of all, sixty ain't that old.. I tell myself that all the time... and if you want to get there you must rid yourself of all your silly preconceptions.

Regarding the logic of your suggestion:

What makes you think the guy was in his sixties?

If he was in his sixties there might have been a greater chance of him just forgetting he owed our friend $125 that simply dying.

If he was a crook, and he ripped off the wrong person... perhaps he got "knocked off" for his transgression... I'll bet Moose and Rocko wouldn't pay much attention to his age.

If he was a crook, then there is a good chance he was a younger guy, say age 44 or less, taking advantage of us older, sixtyish, dudes who we all know are much more trusting and gullible.

If he just died because he was in his sixties.... why did he remove his post and contact information before his transformation.

....Finally... Tim, thanks for your heads up... but the real lesson here is to be careful how you do business. This transaction should have had a written contract between buyer and seller and a third party executor (such as an escrow) which holds the funds until everyone is satisfied. yeah, I know it's only a $125 deal but the process is alot simpler than it sounds, and it protects both buyer and seller. There's a good chance the crook would have bolted when you mentioned these terms.

I do not feel bad about it. I am a pretty laid back guy that is rarely all that serious. I really do look up to you guys that never look back and keep sailing. That really is who I want to be at 70+. I also want to be the guy on my long board still paddling into waves. I still surf and love it. One of my buddies is 71, we sail together on my boat and he always tells me everything like his way is the only way. He gets me into a little trouble when we sit at the lake and drink some beers. He loves looking at the ladies and he locks on and follows anything in a bikini and never looks away. My wife just shakes her head. It would be an accomplishment for me to get to 70+. I am a Choctaw Indian and some Irish, my grandfather died at 62. My father died at 63. Both had to face cancer and both drank a lot. My blood line has not been long lived but some of that has been being too harsh on the body. I have occasional beers but nothing like my dad and granddad. I watched my dad kill a 12 pack before noon pretty regularly. I hope to be where you and plan to really enjoy that time.

I doubt this guy is dead; he's just a turd.
