higgs, one of our past commodores said it's the BEST job ever: you get to delegate all of your tasks...
All yacht clubs have politics imbedded in their operations and this makes serving on the board tough. It is best to be thick skinned, but the problem is I am not. It upsets me when people are upset with me. I enjoy serving my club. We require 10 hrs service, but I put in around 100 hours. What I don't like is the second guessers, who put in their 10 hours and then bitch. Worse yet, are the guys who used to put in a lot of hours and then figure they have paid their dues, put in the minimum, but now expect everyone to heed their agenda. Anyways, you guys will probably be hearing a lot of venting from me this year and I will appreciate your input.

Yeah It is meant to be humorous, and I get it. Consider the members who put in the time, don't gripe about it, follow the rules, and feel as if they are not getting what they want from the organization. Reading that letter might only make them feel more isolated from the club they joined.
Most clubs have a hard-core group of about 25% of membership that shows up for races, social events, work parties, etc. They also serve leadership roles.
The others may not have the time but are avid enough to join, and may have some legitimate concerns too. Ratings shenanigans are probably most common, followed by feelings of neglect.
I'm just sayin your letter might turn some people (potential members?) off.

It turns out the newsletter editor plans on printing it - he loved it. We have a pretty good sense of humor at our club and, as an active member, most know my sense of humor. I convinced him to add a note at the bottom directing people to the next page where the real letter will be.
Dittos to what Peggy said. I got it, Higgs, that it was a joke and I thought it was perfect. Sheesh.

Personally, I don't think keelhauling is used enough these days. I think someone should be keelhauled at least once a season, just to keep the crew on their toes...
