It may be a little intimidating for a novice sailor if the wind picks up. Be sure that you reef early anytime the winds pick up over 10-12 kts. I don't think you want to scare the holy s--t out of your wife and/or crew. Other than this these boats are very spacious and have a lot of room for a couple for a few days.

My wife and I bought a 97 H26 over the summer. We have spent several weekend over nights and had no issues. I could see two people spending 2-3 days with no problems.

Bog13;

email me at davecondon@mindspring.com with your phone numbers and I will give you a call.

I am probably the one you need to talk with as I am the one who for better lack of terms know this boat better than most.

We'd spend 2-3 nights on our C22, and then a week at a time or more on our C25. Consider that your H26 will seem huge compared to those. Enjoy and welcome to boat ownership.

The H26 is a comfortable, roomy boat that probably is as seaworthy as any comperable trailerable boat. It has more room in the cabin than most 26 footers. I have spent a week at a time onboard with my wife, one week with 3 grandchildren. I did keep mine in a slip, raising and lowering the mast, launching and retreiving were more than I care to deal with in a weekend. It should be OK on the Great Lakes as long as you watch the weather and reef at a reasonable time.

We know a couple that sailed/motored their H260 around the entire Great Loop. It was awesome and they had a great time. While it's not considered an open water boat, we sail ours in the Gulf all the time.....but always check the weather for a longer crossing. It's a lightweight boat making it a great trailer boat but it's not up to too much open water abuse. A prudent captain knows his eqts limits and respects a good margin of error.

I'd also go over all the rigging, electronics, safety eqt and critical components considering the boats age. Don't compromise safety for the sake of a few bucks in mandatory maintenance that can get neglected when a previous owner has tired of his boat.

We've had ours for 6yrs and often do week long cruises so don't worry about space for extended use because it's simply a great boat. There's a ton of great mods posted here to make your boat anything from a kooshy day sailor to an extended voyage coastal adventurer.

Good luck and congrats.
