I have just traded my 36' for a new 400 Catalina. I would like to replace the three blade fixed blade propeller with a folding or feathering one. I do some racing but mostly use the boat for cruising. I'm looking at 1. autoprop 2. Gori three blade folding and 3. a three blade Flex-O-Fold. I'm looking for some advise. The Flex-O-Fold literature is impressive but I haven't been able to independently verify it. Thanks

Reverse

Don't know much about them except that you can have a pretty hard time in reverse with most of them. Check that out carefully before you switch! LaDonna

Can't really help you, except consider posting your question in the prop and drive train forum (under expert forums).

Autoprop, J-prop

After having spent lots of time researching this topic, I learned the following: 1. Folding props typically result in some loss of motoring performance. They also are reputed to work poorly in reverse. Best for sailing speed. 2. Feathering props are better, but create slightly more resistance than folders while under sail. Even so, the resistance is far less than with a fixed prop. Good choice for cruisers as well as racers. 3. For someone who mostly cruises, the Autoprop is far and away the best choice. Superb performance while motoring, ability to stop your boat within one boat length by reversing, excellent directional performance in reverse. However, it is quite costly. By the way, I purchased a J-prop feathering propeller for my Catalina 30, and I'm pretty satisfied. The pitch can be changed easily without tools while the boat is in the water.

Not quite so, LaDonna

Ladonna, Folding props have a hard time in reverse, but both feathering (Maxprop) and Autoprop are GREAT in reverse. The leading edge of the prop is the same whether in forward or reverse. A fixed prop is a compromise in all situations. Tom Soko Julandra #659

folding prop

Had a Martec on my 30 for 18 years. No problem and I found reverse easy to handle. Gun it to start to get the blades our and ease back a bit. I'm planning on a Martec 2 blade for my Cat34

Autoprop for me!

Chuck, When I bought my boat I went the extra money and upgraded to an Autoprop. What sold me was when my broker told me about backing out of a crowded harbor against a 30 kt wind. If you go with the Autoprop, first time you really need reverse you'll be sold for life. I love mine.

I have the Maxprop

I have the Maxprop on a 2001 C36 and it's the cat's pajamas. It cost 12 hundred bucks but was worth every penny... Regards, Chris
