Hi there We are considering buying either a feathering or folding prop for our C27. The current prop is 12" LH 9 pitch, 2 blade Sailor. Our engine is 1 single stroke Yanmar 8. Would like opinions/ experiences from C27 owners..Thanks much

Donna: I have a 76 Cat 27. I am engaged in racing so I felt a folding prop was in order when I got the boat....I have an A-4 for power....My cheap solution was to get a Used Folding prop from Martec (562)435-4494.....Cost was $250 + shipping.....The only comment that I can make is that after installing the folding prop over the 2-blade standard was that there seems to be a bit more vibration and the backing ability (never good in a sailboat) became more of a hassle. Is my speed increased????who knows... Have no idea about feathering props, but I would imagine they are spendy plus if damaged there is always the repair problem...Good Luck...DAVE

Folding prop experience
Donna, We had a Martec folding prop matched to the same 1 cyl 8hp Yanmar on our Wilderness 30 which we raced often. It performed very well in both forward and reverse. The only problem we had was caused by shifting at too high RPM. The sudden force to the prop caused the pin that the blades ride on to bend and the fork to spread a little. It cost about 1/3 the cost of a new prop to have it repaired. I have one now on my Cat 38 and am very still very happy with the performance. fair winds, Dave

Some other Props to consider. The Kiwi Feathering. The composite blades make it much cheaper than the other feathering models. Dockmate loves his. I have a Campbell Sailor 3 blade. It suprised me with it's thrust. Much better performance than the Michigan Sailor it replaced. The narrow profile also reduces drag under sail. It reduces prop walk in reverse and I think the curved profile helps wash off barnacles and marine growth. More to think about
