:cussing: I carefully made my renewal for my ship's station renewal, sent it in with 60 bucks and got a 'Dismissal Notice' which means they ate my 60 bucks and I have to refile everything and pay again. I HATE that! First, wading through that mess to figure out what forms they want is a PITA. I spent half a day on it. Then you have to wade through the forms themselves to figure out what sections they want completed. Then, you have to file another form with the payment and go to what you hope is a current schedule of fees to figure out what applies to you. If they don't like it, they keep the money and you get to start all over. Plus, the form letter they send rejecting the filing is itself nearly indecipherable. I worried about the fee (which may be the reason they rejected mine) because they appear in various editions of federal registers and it isn't so clear which is the most current. In my case, I ran a copy and highlighted it. Arrgggghhh! I guess I'll just have a drink and hope for a better attitude adjustment tomorrow. :cussing:

Gee, Rick, what transmitting equipment do you have that requires a ship's license? I seem to remember that all the common equipments like VHF, radar, and maybe EPIRB no longer require a license.

I thought that the one reason you might need a license is if you are transmitting in foreign waters. Is that your case?

I also have a SSB but don't recall if it needs to be licensed or not. In my case, it's because of communicating within foreign waters (Mexico specifically).

You have to have a ship's license and a restricted radio operator's license to operate the SSB, even in U.S. waters. Rick, didn't you do it on line?

Yea, that's right. I forgot since I already had the license. No, I didn't do it on line because the #@%&!!! site was funky and it kept throwing me off. I did find a register dated Sept '09 which has a different fee so that's probably it. I'll try it again on line. I wish they'd kill the old records when they issue new ones. It isn't, as they say, intuitive!

Same thing happened to me about six years ago. Had to send a letter requesting a refund with a copy of my 'Dismissal Notice'. Don't know if the rules have changed but you would only be out the cost of a stamp.

I looked and I thought the fee was $160. That's the advantage of wading through on-line. The system is supposed to check your work and calculate the correct fee. Good news is I just got my license about 18 months ago, so I won't have to do this for another 8 1/2 years!

As a follow up, I refiled my renewal, this time on line. I had no problem this time. It was smooth and fast. I'm still going to write them asking for my sixty bucks back. There ought to be just the current fee schedule instead of trying to wade through all the different registers to figure out which one is current. IMHO.
