I have a friend who is a sailboat owner and
has sailed for more that 20 years, teaches sailing, works for seatow and has his "6 pack" ticket. I was discribing to him a situation I encountered the is close to your question. I was motoring in the channel heading for my slip when a sailboat from the local school sailed across the channel.Lots of room, no fault or harm. After about 200 yards he tacks and reverses course, this puts him crossing my bow about the time I cross his course. I held my course until he could see the rust marks on my anchor and put the helm down and passed his stern.
A. he was by every rule within his rights to do that.
B. I gave way after I was sure that doing otherwise would put me on top of him.
C. I asked my friend about this and his response was,"Just because you can legally do something doesn't make it good seamanship."
D. I sent an email to the sailing school and detailed the encounter. We have about 4 square miles of very good open water in that area and most of it is not crowded.
E. I have seen the school's boats out since then and they make for low traffic, open water to instruct their clients.
