I have recently purchased a 2000 h260 i have found that is alot faster on the port tack by approx 20% has anyone found this or do i have the boat set up incorrectly.This is not knot meter variation it has been verified by gps.Any suggestion to go faster on the starboard tack would be appreciatted. thanks trevor cuell (rocklobster) geelong australia

It sounds like your boat may be unbalanced somewhere. A couple of possibilities: a) shrouds may be tighter on one side b) you may have more weight on the port side (outboard, batteries, potable water tank, etc. so less heel and more speed. c) centerboard may be loose Keep looking, you'll find it soon. I've noticed that too...
I have a 97 h26 and i notice the same thing. I am going to do a good job of tunning the standing rigging this summer and see shat diff that makes. I notice, in comparing to boats next to mine in the marina that I have alot of mast rake. That could make a diff too. I do have a starting battery and two storage batteries on the port stern too. I figure it's mostly in the tuning though.

I have a 1984 Hunter 34 and it too is significantly faster on the port tack, (wind coming over the port side)My boat carries more weight on the starboard side, fuel, batteries refrigeration etc so the lighter/flatter business does not seem valid. I am going to try and tune the rig to compensate but do not want to slow the port tack in the process!

I have noticed that same thing on my 25.5. I asked my sail maker and he indicated that the mast was probably not centered laterally. He suggested running a measuring tape up the mast on the main sheet and measuring the distances from the chain plates. I did this and noticed a 2.5" difference. I haven't re-tuned yet but when I do I think the problem will go away.

You don't need to run a tape up the mast. Just take your Main Halyard and bring it down to one chain plate and then tie it off. swing it over to the other side and see the difference. Quick and easy. Also check for a bend in the mast port/stb ie: outter stays are not evenly snug. Other things that pop in mind are sheet angles from one tack to the other not the same and main traveler not centered. If the boat is heavy on one side that will also make some difference, boat should sit flat at the pier without you on it. Mine has about a 3 deg list to port from the outboard motor. I need to move some of my junk over to the other side to balance it out. Always something to do on a boat! Scott

My husband talked with the dealer who said that it may have to do with the tension on the shroud lines.We just got a tension gauge for this, but have yet to do adjustments.I'll try to write again if adjusting the shroud line tension helps. So I'm not crazy. I figured my knotmeter wasn't real accurate (location or lake slime) but I can hear the difference in speed. Will be interesting to learn what you'all find, and if is common in any make boat. Tom/Ft Worth

Check shrouds...
We race our 96 H26 and at times notice that we're slower on one tack than the other. We found our mast was bent sideways. Tune the rigging to make sure the spar is straight and you should eliminate most of the difference- we did.

Since we're all on the subject of mast tunning, I'm curious to find out if my mast rake is too far back compared to other 26's. When I look at my boat from the side and compare it to others in the line, mine has a distinct amount of rake. Using the clock analogy,my mast sits at about 12:03 position. I have three batteries, a 8hp uotboard and a six gallon fuel tank and a Edson wheel pedestal an the back, so some of it may be cuz of that?? I have aCDI furler and maybe the fore stay needs to be shortened? What do your mast rakes look like?
