We are new to sailing and have just purchased our first sailboat. It has a 150 Genoa that came with it. It has the main eyelet at the head and tack of the sail. It also has a smaller eyelet both at the head and tack that appears to be fastened to a cord running along the luff. What are the smaller eyelets for. Should I fasten the jib shackle to the smaller one or large one? Would appreciate any input. Thanks.

If it were my boat I would attach the genoa ...

halyard to the larger of the cringles (eyelet or grommet). I'm guessing here but, assuming your genoa is connected to a furler (or not), the smaller of the eyelets might be used to attach another smaller head sail, and the cord is used as a hank for this sail. Terry

I would presume the the smaller

eyelets are for the reinforcing line on the luff. You have piston hanks, yes?

The larger is a reinforcement .....

..... the smaller is what you attach to. There should usually be a few 'wraps' of heavy sail twine under the leather between the two cringles. The larger cringle is there so that the smaller one does not 'tear out' when heavy stress is applied to the halvard, it 'spreads out' the stress in the sail panel. Its a very good way to put the cringles on sail. The sailmaker who made this sail 'really' knew what he/she was doing .... as you rarely see such mountings nowadays (and especially on cheap mail-order sails made in asia).

Just looked at the picture. I bet that a rope

runs over the larger eyelet. I have not seen this approach before. Usually the large eye is the cringle with several smaller rings sewn in and all lashed together. This is nice work.

hook on to the small eyes

for whatever reason you guys determine the modification was made... fuller hoist, cunningham, better fit, etc... the smaller eyes have the thimbles...

Hook onto the smaller thimble at the extreem tip

This is standard construction. The larger cringle below the "head" thimble is there to spread out the load. DO NOT attach to the cringle as you will be pulling along the sail and not the bolt rope. Attaching to the cringle will make hoisting difficult and setting the sail impossable. Roosa Family TRITIUM

Please disregard my earlier advice. After...

taking a closer look at your picture and comments from other posters, they are right. You should connect your halyard to the upper most smaller grommet. Terry

It's made in Asia I suspect!

I've just installed a luff tape on a genoa that looks just like that one with the same attention to details. Very well made - in Asia - by Lee Sails of Hong Kong! sam :) C&C 26 Skye II Ghost Lake Alberta
