Fast Trailerable?

Moorage is Too Expensive! I'm thinking of going trailerable so I can store it in my driveway.

I had a Venture 22 many years ago, and it was OK but SLOW. If I was to go to a trailerable, I'd want something that, if not a screamer, would at least allow me to get to my destination in a reasonable time.

Now, the Main Problem I see with trailerables is the keel. Water ballast makes the boat too tender, and a big swing keel means a cable that drags. I've seen a wetf...err... hotfoot 20 and I believe the Pocket Rocket and they have a daggerboard-style keel that pulls up vertically. Problem is, that REALLY uses up usable space down below - makes them essentially dinghys.

Any thoughts on something reasonably fast in the 22-24ft range? Also, any recommendations or stories on how to make your trailerable faster (rigging changes, keel fairing...?)

We've had our Lancer 25 to 7.5 MPH (6.6 knots?) on our runner's GPS. Stop the truck to launch in 1/2 hour in some pretty shallow water, sleeps 4-5, draws 30". 25 knots winds, 8' seas, not a problem. 6'0 headroom. The head is really small though. Hope this helps for comparison.

Lots of good boats

There are lots of good boats that might fit your desire. I like my Precision 23 with its shoal draft keel and centerboard. Its pretty quick and points well. It also has space inside. Older ones are less expensive, but sail just as well.

I would try and find a Catalina 25 on a trailer. Most people that I know who have them are really happy with them. I got the Cat 27 with a shoal draft on a trailer for a little more room and comfort. My Mac 25 was quite a bit faster than the Mac 22.

If money is mo object, check out a Presto 30! I was on one at the Annapolis boat show this year, and it was quite sweet. It can do 10+ under sail and is easily trailerable. If money is an object, a MacGregor 25 is going to be hard to beat for the dollar.

Being a sailboat all things "fast" are relative to about 6kts being considered fast. Coming from a catamaran background but reluctant to downsize my top speed to 6kts I'd love a Stiletto catamaran with a big screecher that would be scary fast but alas they're becoming rare and my over abused skin needs shade. So we compromised and bought a much slower but roomy Hunter 260 and put a gennaker and bow sprit for off wind work. upwind the large roachy main and fairly flat bottom will carry her upwind just fine if shes not overloaded for cushy cruising(which it always is).

Our H260 trailers well and setup is much easier with a 12v remote mast step system. It's big behind the truck but still works.

I'd think that a catalina 22 rigged for speed would be your best answer for a driveway yacht. There's great support and more than a few speed geeks who've pushed the envelope on them. They can be found in any range of condition from junk yard dog to grey hound. Good luck, Michael

If you want fast, look into an S-2 7.9. Daggerboard draws 5', hull 18". Rudder swings up for shallow ramps. Sails with/beats J-24. 5-6 head room, quarterberths.

druid, we have a 2004 fin keel Capri 22 that is pretty quick but a real pain to launch/retrieve. A dock neighbor has the wing keel version that is much easier to trail and is just as quick but doesn't point quite so sharp (not a huge difference though). The interior is pretty plain on the Mk II's (post 2000) but serviceable - Mk I's are 'nicer'. Nice Mk I's go for 4K - 8K and Mk II's 10K and up.

P.S. The Capri w/ racing package while not as fast as the J-22 is very respectible and has a more user-friendly cockpit. We have the adjustable backstay, cabin top jib tracks, spinnaker pole track w/ car, etc. One of the biggest factors is the bottom/keel. Keep it clean and smooth and she'll haul butt.

This is the first boat I was thinking of when I read your question. Can get the board option or a deep keel. Can even get a diesel. Used to crew on these back in the day. Sailed properly it's a screamer.

That and a J-22...launching is tougher with the keel..but a true fast sailer.

Ain't that just the truth? We have the fin keel/tall rig and it's a blast!

Beneteau First 235 -- quick, relatively large inside, there was a fixer upper in GA at Lanier Marine Liquidators for $2,900. It needed a lot of work, but you can find sailable ones pretty easily for under $10K. They carry a 195 PHRF rating, which is comparable to most 28 footers.
The S2 7.9 with that lifting keel would be a close second for me.
It's hard to find something that is both fast and has decent headroom and accomodations.

Here's another vote for S2 boats. I have sailed on one but never owned one. The 7.9 meter version is relatively quick with a PHRF rating of 168 (Your PHRF may vary.) The 7.9 meter S2-7.9 is the biggest I consider trailerable. The 6.7 meter (PHRF 210) would would be easier. These boats have retractable weighted keels but sail like fixed keel boats. They are primarily racing boats but have basic creature comforts in a somewhat fragmented cabin.
