I leave next week to spend a couple of weeks in the Azores. Anybody out there spend any time there? Recomendations for things to see, places to eat?

In 1971...

...I spent 3 days in Funchal, Madeira. Unfortunately, I was in the Navy. Beautiful, Mountainous, sea cliffs, white stucco house with orange roofs and very cultural. Rented a car to tour around. Different, but nice. I do remember ordering fried shrimp in a restaurant and got pan fried shimp in olive oil and they still had the heads on them. Don't assume anything...ask questions about the food.

That's funny, I spent 6 months there care of the USN also. Had a great time. Wine good ("green" wine is unique to the place), food good. There are several Islands in the chain and each one is the same but again different. The Islanders used to hunt whales from small boats. Liked the small shops there. It isn't New York City but that is not a bad thing really. Get out there and explore and find things yourself. People were nice back then. Just don't run over a chicken in your travels. You will have to pay for the chicken and all its future potential batch of eggs and baby chickens. A two dollar chicken can end up costing serveral hundred!
