Today I purchased (2) Hella Fans for my Hunter 26. I have seen in the archives where several people have installed similar fans and thought it sounded pretty straight forward. Boy, was I wrong. The past post I remember, the owner tied into the existing overhead light wiring and mounted nearby. I want to install a fan in the V Berth and in the Aft berth, however I can't seem to find a way to route the fan wiring from the light fixture to the desired mounting location approximately 30" away. My Hunter has fiberglass/ foam insulation in all overhead spacing above the headliner, no way to fish through. I spent almost 3 days fishing the speed and depth cables for the instruments a few weeks ago and don't really want to go through that again. Anyone have a better or simpler way to accomplish this install? TIA, JSetser

Beside the light

I mounted mine on the bulkhead beside the light fixture and used only about 6" of wire that ran from base to base.

I tapped directly into the lighting fixtures. After...

...two years I will sodder the connections anyday for safety. I let the wires run about two inches along the cabin liner (doesn't look too bad). There are two fans on either side of the light fixture above galley table. It's easier to place a fan aft as you are right by the fuse pannel. If you do as I did, calculate the current draw with all the lights and fans on and make sure your wiring can handle it. Probably is best to run a separate line but as you said with the foam, it's difficult. The small fans have a suprisingly low draw, so low I don't exactly believe the specs. alan

Lowes wil find a way

I foud a nifty way to take care of the wire problem on the fan install. Lowes has a very nice package of surface mount wire mold. It matches the color of the headliner and is self adhesive. It comes with a group of elbows and connectors that made the transition from the light fixture simple and attractive. I would post a picture, but I'm off for the weekend sailing. I'll post when I return next week. Trust me on this one, it's a great way to make the wiring fit the decor. Best wishes and fair winds. JSetser
