Gordon and others, I posted a question a few weeks back regarding a loose fan belt. After reading the advise, I decided to order a correct belt from torreson marine. (nice people) I was able to install it ( with the recommeded half-inch thumb pressure according to theUniversal manuel ). When I removed the old belt I was aware that the belt had been installed with the flat side facing away from the pully's and the side with ridges and V shaped facing into the pully's. Now my question is: The new belt is the installed opposit of the old belt. flat suface facing the pully's and the side with the ridges facing away from the ridges. This is how it was packaged and the V fits into the pully's. We motroed for a couple of hrs. It looked and sounded ok. Does this sound ok? (1987 cat. M25 engine) Second question? If I incorrectly installed the belt how would it effect the temp. of the engine? The temp. never got over 150 usually runs at 160. Thank you, Jan

belt upside down

your belt should be installed like the one you removed with the "v"into the pully and the flat side out!

Re-install the belt

Jan, The answer to your second question is that even though you have the belt upside down or since it is triangular - twisted 120 degrees, as long as the belt is not slipping the water pump will turn fine and keep your engine cool. BUT, the Problem is it will wear out Much faster and start slipping. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656

M25 V belt

The new belt from Universal (300805) does have notches on the back side. They are put there to give the belt additional depth to prevent it from rolling over but not decrease the flexibility of the belt that is required to have it bend around the pulleys. It sounds like you have installed it properly.

Thanks Gordon!

Gordon, Thank you for you initial advise about the V shape, it was helpful to me when I was trying to figure out how to install the belt. What a great service you provide: #1 you correctly diagnosed the problem and #2 you confirmed my installation question. E-gads I feel lucky!!!!!!!
