Hi,
Any folks with young kids out there who might be hitting Barkley Sound / Nootka Sound this summer?
We are heading up from Victoria for the month of July. This will be the 3rd time we've taken the kids up there. On the last trip we carved up our plank for Hot Springs Cove boardwalk, spent some great days in Tofino with bus rides to Long Beach, hung out in Ukee, and did a few amazing rain forest hikes.

AMEE flotilla has tentative plans to cruise Barkley Sound this coming season. No children, however. Just four cranky old guys who enjoy cruising together.

Hi Terry,
I bought Sandy Evers (Old Sailor on here I think) Hunter 42 last March and have read many posts on the boat, and many of those yours. If I can I wanted to ask you about your wrote quite a while ago about mast leaks. I have one and can't seem to find the drain channel at the base of the mast you talked about in the post. Any tips on finding it? I'm hoping to avoid lifting the mast off.
Thank you, Dennis

Hi Dennis, as best as I can describe it, the drain port is molded into the underneath side of cast aluminum mast step plate that the mast rests on. So, if you were to stand at the bow looking aft at this mast step plate, the weep hole is located on the underneath side and center of this plate's leading edge. It is small, but large enough to allow rain water to drain out, but small enough to become clogged with gunk.

So, the step plate rests on the coach roof and the very center of the plate's leading edge is where you will find this drain port.

You can use a long pipe cleaner to auger out this weep hole. Last year in Sullivan Bay in a down pour rain water came into our cabin and down the compression post. It had been awhile since last cleaning this weep hole. When I stuck the cleaner into this hole, water came pouring out, which solved the problem.

Please let me know if and when you find it. It does serve an important function. If I can remember the next time at the boat in a week or so I will take a photo of it.

As long as the stand pipe (the piece of conduit that extends through the coach roof and into the mast base for mast wiring) is sealed and in good condition, keeping that weep hole clean should solve the problem. Such was not the case with our boat. The repair to this conduit did fix the rain water leak that we had and helped me to understand what was going on.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Terry. I'll print this and take it with me and see if I can find the drain. I've looked but haven't found it yet. I have a black "plate" over the base of the mast and don't see any holes near it. The leak isn't terrible--it doesn't rain as much as where you are, but the water from the compression post gets the inside wood flooring wet and starts to cause problems. I've gotten in the habit of pulling the center seat back and leaving the forward floor section off so no water touches the deck, but I'd be happier if I could just fix the leak. The stand pipe through the coach roof had some new wiring added so it may be a problem as well. I read one post that said the used they expanding foam to seal it but I want to make sure I'm not making it worse.

Also, I have read many of your posts and I have gained a great deal from them. You are a kind person for sharing your insights.

You are most welcome, Dennis.

The PO of our boat used Silicone II around that piece of conduit from the inside, but to no avail. Using the foam might work, but I doubt it.

To narrow the possibilities, pour some water into the base of the mast through one of the block slots to determine whether the water is coming through the inside of the conduit or past the conduit seal.

Our boat has not black cover around the mast base. The mast rests directly on the cast aluminum base. The base is held in place with four machine bolts that extend through the coach roof.

Let me know what you find out.

Guys, perhaps there's a better place for this discussion? It's really off-topic.

Hi Mike,
I have benefited greatly from this forum and as such wish to be as respectful here as I can. You can see that I haven't done a lot of posting--mostly reading--and so I'm not familiar with contacting people. I saw Terry's post here and that's why I asked my question. I did look for a way to private message him and didn't find one, until now. My wife is fond of saying I don't listen, don't hear and can't see. And my kids kicked me off Facebook. I'm hoping you understand I need all the help I can get. With that said, I understand you're looking for people cruising to Barkley Sound and I apologize for interfering with that.

Ken Gepner is a long time sailor/racer from Everett, WA. I worked with him for a few years until he retired this past fall and now lives up north. He has done several cruises into Barkley Sound and I'm hoping to have an exchange of ideas from him soon on the topic. I will share those when I receive them. Alas, he has also retired from sailing.

Back in the late nineties when Patti and I were shopping for our first sailboat, Ken and his son took us out in his Hunter 27 for race day in Port Gardner. We were going to buy his boat for sale, but as fate would have it his son decided to keep it in the family. Soon after we bought our first, an H28.

Ken used to lurk here, perhaps he will chime in.
