Logging it!

I keep a log. I include Date time out/in,crew names, weather conditions, distance sailed, total time out/sailing time. I also describe what kind of a trip it was. What I did and saw. I especially like to write about anything new I learned. I also talk about any problems encountered and what I did to solve them. I wish I had more time to do the log. I usually am the only one on board that can handle the boat any length of time and I usually don't come in until dark and people want to get home, so it feels rushed. I try to read them in our non-sailing months of which we have too many in MN!

A Big Plus

I bought the "Evergreen" log book. It has pre-tabbed sections and has lots of room for journal-style entries. The Log is a great place to keep all relevant boat info, like serial numbers, equipment info, project lists, etc. I also make an entry for every sail. I let the kids make their own additions to the entries, as well as any guests. I find it invaluable as an aide to my fading memory as to what sail configuration worked in which weather, as well as a great way to relive some wonderful times.

Excel Log

Message to Jerry, You read my mind in designing an Excel Log. Would you be willing to share a page of your log to look at your setup? Thank you,

Being ready

I have a section in the log book thats titled What if? This has to be read by all who come aboard for a sail. In it I describe where to find things such as fire extingusher life jackets etc. and request they find them. I am the one that usually mans the helm, sets the sails etc. but does every one have some idea of how to get her home if something should happen to me. This includes stepping & dropping the mast with pictures for helps. Then for anyones interest there is the trip log which I encourage anyone to fill in. Its always great reading when locked in a harbor due to high seas. I noticed that Most that come aboard are Ok with reading the tech stuff like how to call mayday on the radio. I added humor into it so that I don't get them off the boat before we set sail. I suggest that everyone who has passengers that have not sailed have something like this.

Serparate Maintenance

We keep a separate Excel maintenance log, which, when or if we ever sell the boat, goes with the boat. The log books we're keepin'!!! All the fun stories routes, people, etc. are ours for the memories. Stu
